  1. Good point Leafless. The meaning of the holiday is determined by the one who celebrates it. But also, in Dancer's defense, he was not wrong. He said the rites, palms, stations of the Cross, etc., were not pagan. He did not say anything about the name. Except that he called them Easter Rituals.
  2. Charles has been doing a great job from what I can see. No complaints here.
  3. Yes that's true. I know I read something about that before and specific mention of not being able to use Mr. Dithers. I think it was mentioned in a thread some time ago. I haven't been here for a year yet so I would not have been here when it was put in place.
  4. I live by a fishing wharf Angus. Lots of that stuff here. My family used to fish--my uncle had a lobster boat. I never fished. Lobster is good but its not something I go crazy over, but most people seem to. I love shrimp though. Great in stir fry. Scallops too. So you actually had the deep-fried Mars Bar, Marc. Was it tasty? I have had deep fried ice cream before. Poutine is a good artery clogger, but I love that---with potato wedges instead of fries though. A couple things I forgot to mention are stewed rhubarb with bread and butter, and peanut butter and molasses sandwiches (with a tall glass of milk).
  5. I love perogies Marc, but Ive never had polish ones. Sounds pretty good though. And is that deep fried Mars Bar thing for real? Ive never heard of that. Oh and I think Coke is better than Pepsi. Unless you are stuck with diet cola (blech). Then the reverse is true.
  6. Thanks for the replies so far folks. I wasn't sure if I would get any. Mmmm....I guess I am kind of plain eater. I like meat and potatoes, boiled yellow beans, turnips, squash. All smothered in slimy butter. That's my kind of meal right there. For breakfast---Red River Cereal. Or Quaker Oats. I like cooking my hot cereal with some apple cubes and a little cinnamon. Right now I use a lot of stuff out of the garden. I use leaf lettuce, raddish, cucumbers etc in salads most every day. Leaf lettuce is excellent cuz unlike head lettuce, you dont run out. You pick the leaves and they grow back. And I eat quite a bit of zuchinni in the summer because I grow that too. I stir fry it in oil with some beans and peas. No special sauce. Just salt, pepper. Very plain. Buttercup squash---thats gotta be my favourite veggie (its a fruit really but....) As for meat I am not picky. Hot dogs, steaks, roasts, sausages, chicken nuggets, roasts---of course I'd rather have a roast than a hot dog or chicken nugget--but anyhow. I like fish. Sole, haddock, salmon---all that is good. I like some canned fish too---sardines, herring etc. Beverages...I don't drink much alcohol, but I'll have Alexander Keiths if you can get me to a bar now. Kind of homebody. I don't like wine, but my brother makes lots and usually gives me a bottle (which I usually have one glass of before tossing it a month later). Don't tell him. Coffee..now there is a beverage folks. If you ever see me online here at 3:44 am this is because of my love for coffee. I like a really dark roasted coffee, a little cream, no sugar. I like Tim's too, but only in small doses...gives me the shakes. I drink King Cole Tea (maritimer staple). The proper way to make King Cole Tea is to put two or three bags in the pot and boil it to death. It's gotta be black black black. Then you add canned evaporated milk. And I love pies. Pies better than cake. I usually ask for a pie on my birthday. Never a cake. And no creamy sugar banana pies. Thats gross. I like apple, cherry, strawberry rhubarb, tomato lemon, etc. My favourite pie now, is one I hated when I was a kid---Pumpkin Pie. That is the king of pies. I mentioned my brother making wine. He gets those wine kits at the brew shops. He doesn't do the old fashioned gig. But anyway, do we have any brewers here? Even though I don't drink much it would be a great hobby I think.
  7. And also I'd like to add beverages and booze to that. And I wanna know what is the best beer? And which is better--Coke or Pepsi?
  8. I don't know if this is the appropriate place for this, but I thought I would try to start an "ice breaker" thread about food. The idea being you can share recipes or talk about foods you like. Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Muslims, Atheists, Conservatives, Liberals, Democrats, New Democrats, and Republicans----we all have stomachs. Now let's here what you all like to stuff them with.
  9. Hmm I wonder if the mods would allow a food thread within the morals subforum. That would be a great way for people who are normally at each others throats to share recipes once in a while and make each other drool. I am going to try it.
  10. Oh I like a little bulk too, but I get that from coffee cream and butter, and pastries. Slurp.
  11. Like wild meat? Hmmm....not what I have had, anyway. I havent had it in a long time and only a few times in my life, but it is good. Sort of dry, but tasty. It's pretty lean and healthy. Blech buffy, I hate venison. I got some steaks from my brother last year though. I stewed it. In stew it isnt so strong. Sweet potatoes are awesome Angus. But I like buttercup squash better for mashed up orange stuff. Anyone ever had kohl rabi? I planted it this year and I don't even know what it is really.
  12. Have you ever had buffalo?
  13. If all the world is a stage, then Maple Leaf Web must be a musical. After a little dialogue you can always count on someone to spontaneously burst into song.
  14. "Ye have heard that it hath been said, 'Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy.' "But I say unto you, 'Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and them which despitefully use you, persecute you, that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven; for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.' For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? Do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." I think modern society and Christians themselves are quite far from perfecting this one.
  15. There is nothing scriptural which says Mary is the mother of God. There is nothing which says she is the "new Eve". These are Catholic additions. The disciples preached that salvation comes under one name. Yet Catholicism says: "Taken up to heaven she (Mary) did not lay aside this saving office but by her manifold intercession continues to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation..." Pg. 252, #969 "Being obedient she (Mary) became the cause of salvation for herself and for the whole human race." Pg. 125, #494 "She (Mary) is inseparably linked with the saving work of her Son." Pg. 303, #1172 "Those who spread the word about the glory of Mary are certain of Heaven." -- St. Bonaventure. "Whoever asks and expects to obtain graces, without the intercession of Mary, is attempting to fly without having wings." Doesn't this go beyond being blessed? Mary was the one who described herself as a handmaiden and that was uncapitalized. She thanked God for recognizing her and choosing her even though she was just his lowly handmaiden. That is not Handmaiden of God. When someone calls himself a lowly servant of God, does that make him The One and Only Sacred Blessed Servant of God of Immaculate Compassionate Heart Pyjamas and Apple Pies of the Mysterious Blessed Heart?
  16. Still though I can see quite a distinction between being called blessed, and being prayed to for intercession before God. And in which gospel is it said Mother of our Lord? Jesus called her "woman". Blessed means something is bestowed upon you, and the one doing the blessing is much greater. Jacob was blessed.
  17. I agree with you, but I am a protestant (and I am not a very good example of one either I am afraid). I don't believe the NT placed this much reverence on Mary. Neither did the disciples mention her as a vital part of the faith in their epistles to churches they had established. She is not mentioned once by them. They focused on Jesus himself, and their doctrine was very simple---Christ crucified. Also there is nothing in the Bible which sets the standard for qualifying saints. Who chooses who gets to be sainted? And then who chooses what they are patron saints of? The New Testament says Peter was married, and if he was also the first "pope", well..... And another problem I feel is important are the doctrines concerning transubstantiation. This was not an original Christian doctrine, nor is it scriptural. It was decreed by Pope Innocent in 1215 A.D., that the magical priests ordained by the organized Catholic church have the ability to perform the miracle of changing the communion wafer into the actual body of Christ. And a few years later adoration of the wafer was sanctioned. Salvation is dependent upon the wafer, according to Catholic doctrine, therefore salvation rests in the hands of the Holy Roman Empire. Pope Innocent solidified the power of the church over people in a few pen strokes. "Heretics", who despised his teaching, were to be burned. But as Martin Luther once said of the Empire Church...."They have never actually burned a heretic." They burned the people who stuck to the truth.
  18. Thats a seperate entity from strict Christian Easter. That's like saying Santa Claus and the elves are part of Christian doctrine.
  19. There is no official pledge, but when I was in elementary we all used to stand and sing the anthem, and then there was something we would say after. Sort of like a pledge. And then we all said the Lord's Prayer, though we were not supposed to.
  20. Lots of people where I live fly the flag. Alot of my neighbours do. I just don't have a flag pole, and the idea of getting one is one thing. It takes me years to stir into action.
  21. Hmmm.... I think many historians now feel that Marie Antionette and Louis have been misrepresented. Though Louis was King, it is sort of like being a figurehead politician, you don't have a complete say in everything that happens. The french nobility had a lot of power and influence. Many historians paint a picture of a rather naive Louis and Marie, who perhaps were not such bad people. Whether this is wholly true or not, one thing is now widely agreed upon: "Let them eat cake." was revolutionary propaganda and not the direct quote of Marie Antoinette in response to the starving public. It was said years before her by another Marie (Marie Therese, wife of Louis the Fourteenth), and used as fuel for the revolutionary fire. And there was no cake either, so I understand. It was "brioche".
  22. "He who saves one life... it is as if he saves an entire universe." Talmud
  23. At a house not so far from mine, they are flying both a Canadian and an American flag. I saw it the other day and I am thinking of doing the same.
  24. Yep, they still both look respectable and clean cut to me. Were your eyes really so affected?
