Government Legislation and the Supreme Court
Gord replied to Gord's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The problem with today's system is the government passes laws which sometimes are illegal because they are in violation of constitution or civil rights. The problem is the average Joe does not have the financial ability to take these laws through the stages of the court system where they finally end up in the Supreme Courts docket. All I am saying is let the Supreme Court rule on new laws prior to them becoming law. The court could then point out where the discrepancies are. It would be up to the government then to amend these discrepancies if they still want to proceed with the legislation. -
I believe that the Supreme Court of Canada should rule on the validity of any legislation passed by the Federal Government prior to it becoming official. My reasoning for this is simple. The only people that can afford to contest any legislation before the Supreme Court are the rich and the corporate world because the average Joe cannot afford to do so. So if Canada is a true believer in freedom for all its citizens then let the Supreme Court rule on the validity of all legislation and if the legislation does not pass the Supreme Court then the government has the opportunity to get it right.

I have a great deal of respect for the RCMP as a whole. But in his case I believe the officers in charge of this investigation should be put on trial and if found guilty should be imprisoned. It is pretty sad when the RCMP labels a 1 year old child as a terrorist. I wonder where they got their intel for that decision? When you see what Arar went through because of some obvious incompetence. It is not enough to simply reprimand or fire the individuals responsible.

This debate could go on for ever. The sad part is the The Dawson College shootings were perpetrated by an individual with registered guns. So please explain to be how the gun registry was able to help prevent such a massacre.

Hey I got an idea. If there is no church that will marry Gay's and Lesbians then they should do like King Henry Vlll and start a new church. Worked for him when the catholic church would not support his divorce and subsequent remarriage. On another note the cost of freedom is allowing people who's concepts are diametrically opposed to yours the freedom to practice their belief's.

Back to my original reply. If it is not the responsibility of the Muslim leadership to route out the personnel responsible for creating the environment of radicalism in their religion then who? I suppose the answer from some of the people viewing this thread might be the Christians. That would work out rather well. "Headline news". Christian lead coalition raids Mosque in an attempt to prevent Muslim radical preachings". Surely that world calm the situation, all the radicals world disappear. This strategy of Christians removing radicalism in Iraq certainly appears to be working well . Sorry for the sarcasm above but I still believe the Muslim leadership must do much more than just denounce the radicalism.

Isn't it amazing what we Canadians allow our tax dollars to be spent on. If you were a CEO of any business would you allow your board to act in such a childish manner without repercussions? It seems to me that Question Period has nothing to do with reality. It only services the purpose of trying to embarrass the current ruling party at all costs. When was the last time that an opposition member got up and complimented the ruling party for something they may have done right?

Sorry my opinion differs a bit I fully place the blame for the violence on the Muslim community. It is not enough to just come out with disapproving statements. The problem clearly lies with the Muslim community and they should be the ones to take the bull by the horns and repair the system that tends to allow extremism to exist, I know the answer will be that there are very few extremists. But these extremist are operating within their community so it is up to them to police and remedy the problem not the infidels. Not withstanding I agree the infidels have created the circumstances which cause these extremists to rebel but there is a right way and a wrong way to confront the situation.

I think personally the government goes about trying to correct problems backwards. Take for example junk food. The common belief is to tax the food which will make the average Joe not eat it. Maybe the proper way would be to subsidize good food which then would make it cheaper than junk food and maybe the average Joe just might buy it. This theory holds especially true for the poor. I have heard insane proposals of giving the poor a subsidy in the form of a cheque to help them eat better. Obviously making the good food cheaper for them to purchase would work much better. Do you really think giving a poor person money to buy food guarantees that money won't be spent on junk food. I suppose if you are a politician you just might.

The sad part of today's society is that the majority "Anglo Saxon's" are the one's being discriminated against especially by the government. An example is the government hiring practices. When hiring, the government considers qualifications a minor issue. But if you are considered a minority you go to the top of the list. From the government's point of view this is supposed to get minority representation in the work force. I say this practice is a lazy man's way of avoiding the more serious problem. If the minority groups can't get jobs based on qualifications, maybe it is high time to review the educational system from which these minority groups were processed. Seems obvious to be that the true disservice was done at the educational level which placed these groups at a disadvantage in the first place.

The sad part is that the government creates a so called health tax. But unfortunately the money gets placed in the general fund because provincial and federal budgets do not place taxes collected in specific accounts. I originally heard that the health tax was being used to repair roads in the city of Toronto. I suppose in might be argued that repairing the roads is a health benefit because it would eliminate a victim's chances of secondary injuries while being transported to a hospital via ambulance.

Very interesting discussion: In my part of the country the Indians say they were robbed by the "white man" when they sold him the land some one hundred years or so ago. What I fail to understand is that if your neighbor puts up a boundary fence that is on you property and it is not contested after 7 years the land becomes his. If that is the case for property owners today why do Indians have the right to contest a land deal agreed upon some 100 years ago? The other part of the problem is what have we taught the Indians. Around here it seems to be occupy the land and the government will give it to you. I am referring to Ipperwash Provincial Park in Ontario. Hell I think we should probably give them the City of Toronto. I am sure there must be a native grave some where with in the city limits. Wouldn't that definitely constitute sacred lands?

Well the Liberals did it right in when first elected. Dalton broke 90% of his promises in the first few months. Voters tend to have a short memory so this will probably not be a factor in the election next year.
