I'll answer it anyway. Many years ago, I made a concious decision to redesign my life in order to eliminate driving. I've been carless for more than 7 years and its been the best decision I could have made. I believe that our society's addiction to cheap oil is a dead end, one that has created and excrabated problems from terrorism, to global warming and environmental destruction, to the health of individuals. And I think that we're due for a reckoning. I posted this in another thread, but here it is again:
-
You know what? Good. More in a second, but first, it's worth pointing out that Albertans get the cheapest gas in th ecountry, not to mention that high crud eprices mean money money money for the province (even a province that takes in such a paltry share of oil royalties as Alberta). So idon't see what bearing gas prices would have on western alienation. Now, gas prices. Even at over a buck a litre, gas is cheap. The price of gas in no way reflects the true cost, which would include the tax subsidization of the oil industry and other government program subsidies; production and transportation costs, environmental, health and otehr social costs, roads, military budgets and so on and so forth. Personally, I think we're just seeing the beginning of the end of the oil age.

If some creep decides to twsit my words to make it sound as though I am in favour of enslaving women, yeah, I'll take it persopnally, whethe rthe original comment was meant to be humourous or not. I'd say about 98 per cent of the discussion on tgi sboard is pretty quality. thi sthread accounts for the missing 2 per cent. So I'm done with it. -
Which would somehow be an even stupider move.

Such is the nature of the current electoral system. Simple population distribution weights the East more than the west and exaggerates regional disparities. Ditching the FPTP electroral system would ensure greater western representation and a stronger voice. Sorry dude: you're mistaken. Albertans pay less for gas than everyone else.
-
I too am perplexed by the way some people cling to this "It's the Crude, Dude" thesis. You guys ever look at a map? Given that a military strike against Iran would be the stupidest move possible, I expect one is coming.

Don't take it so personally. It's a discussion board, not an agreement board.

(A) Already a thread on this over here. ( The Western Standard goes in here.

In asmuch as Mao and Stalin were Communists in theory, but not in practice. Anyway given that all western industrial democracies are socialist in large degrees, arguing that socialism doesn't work is to ignore its role in the success of our own societies.
-
Eureka: of course Hitler was a Communist! That's why he relied heavily on the Junkers and industrialists for the Nazi party's funds, openly denounced communism and, upon seizing power, rounded up the Communists and Socialists and had them killed! Uh... The Nazis were Fascists, a statist ideaology distinct from socialism.

So both her and her husband are dual citizens. Really, though: who gives a damn?

43% of Albertan's and 36% of the West
Black Dog replied to rbacon's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
An online poll? How scientific! I wonder what method the delusional seperatists will use next to demonstrate the support for their cause? Tea leaves? Chicken entrails? i think there's an argument to be made for Quebec independence. I don't agree with it, but it's there. Alberta? Now we're talking spoiled brat syndrome. Mor ethan that, I think rumblings about separation are tailored towards a doemstic audience. "Western alienation" (of which the grumblings about soverignty are a byproduct) is largely designed to distract attention away from the homegrown crooks and liars who have been running Alberta for decades. -

Thing about a sense of humour is that it enables on eto laugh at things that are funny. You're not funny. I can laugh, just not with you. -

How is separatism (which is rooted in nationalism, a decidedly illiberal concept) liberal? No, separatism is perfectly in line with the attitudes espoused by the Alberta's pseudoconservatives, an attitude that can be summed up by the phrase "ME! ME! ME! ME! ME! ME! ME!" -
Albertans accused of red-neck & anti-gay

Ordinarily I'd take exception to that. However, you made the statement and can't take it back so this is just sour grapes. Keep it up and we may make you an honorary redneck Albertan. Are you in Grade Two? I'm asking because I can't imagine anyone with a level of education beyond the level of "Hooked on Phonics" could interperet a declarative statement of fact (is. "(marriage) is an institution rooted in ownership of women." as an endorsement of that fact. Grow up. -

I KNEW IT!!!!!!! You had some redneck in you after all! Atta boy!! Good for you. We'll get you straightened out one day, there is hope. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That is not an endorsement, numbskull. -

Whatever floats their boat, I suppose. People marry for stupid and selfish reasons all the time: for money or status, out of fear of dying alone etc etc. The whole institution of marriage was never the hallowed bond it is regarded as by some. Hell, its an institution rooted in ownership of women. If it's no longer sacred, that' sonly because it never was. -

Black Dog replied to rbacon's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Right, but the reality is, contray to what this bogus poll says, separation isn't really on the radar screen here. The Separation Party of Alberta didn't even get 5,000 votes in the last election. I think the vast majority of Albertans consider themselves Canadians first and foremost. -

Problem with you ahistorical ninnies is that you are incapable of seeing patterns or trends. What we've seen in Iraq is a pattern of incompetence, underestimation, and corruption that has resulted not only n the wa being persecuted on false pretenses in the first place, but has subsequently led to the rise of the insurgency, the glacial pace of reconstruction and the inability of U.S. and Iraqi forces to create a secure environment (let alone assure basic necesstities like water and electricity). To the willfulyy blind, those may seem like "temproaray setbacks", but to the eye with a brain behind it, its part of a pattern that has torepoed any chance of the Iraq experiment succeeding in the manner in which its architects envisioned.
