Israeli Attacks Derails American Efforts
jdobbin replied to jdobbin's topic in The Rest of the World
I thought Israel was supposed to be using missles where they could pinpoint the target? 54 dead is one hell of a "mistake". This article I posted elsewhere says that ground forces in Israel often are indifferent to what they hit despite what senior officers and government say. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/sto...=Mark+MacKinnon -
UNIFIL immediately reported any Hezbollah in their vicinity. The last report from that UNIFIL base was that there was no Hezbollah in their immediate vicinity. The link I put up is from insiders including and American who say that Israel ground troops were indifferent to whether they hit U.N. or civilians. This article came out Friday and predicted that it was inevitable that a massive civilian target would be hit under these type of conditions. It happened today and now U.S. efforts are temporarily disrailed. Rice went home.

I think the U.S. has already made an exemption for a new drug that Cuba has developed. Funny, how when it suits American business, they want access to Cuban markets. Since this comes just 4 months before an election, I think that Bush will stay quiet. However, by that time, rights to the oil fields will already be decided. And since under that law, the oil can't go to the United States, contracts will be signed with other nations to receive that oil.

Six Nations Crisis- “Canada’s Pandora’s Box?”
jdobbin replied to NativeCharm's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I have no idea what the policies of a Six Nations community would be. I guess I'd have to look at your present situation. Do you have housing developments for non-Natives on your lands now? Can they become a citizen of the Six Nations? Do they have voting rights? If not, why not? -
Another Globe and Mail article on the targetting of U.N. people. It brings into question whether Israelis forces actually cared whether they hit a U.N. base or not. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/sto...=Mark+MacKinnon

Have certain provinces run their economies into the ground or do they just have less revenue? And the U.S. government does collect more taxes from Texas and re-distribute them elsewhere through transfer payments.

Dual Citizenship....an abuse of privilege?
jdobbin replied to Canuck E Stan's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I only placed the stories that are not content protected. I was told that some people couldn't see some Globe and Mail or Winnipeg Free Press stories. More and more papers are doing that. -
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/...an-liberal.html The woman who stepped aside to let Emerson run in 2004 is coming back to oust him. It isn't clear that Emerson is going to run again but I think this is one seat that the Liberals can win next election.

Six Nations Crisis- “Canada’s Pandora’s Box?”
jdobbin replied to NativeCharm's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Are you sure the policy of the Six Nations is to welcome outsiders onto their land or to evict them? -
It would probably be hard to get rid of the World Health Organization. They actually already get a lot of funding privately and have several semi-autonomous regional offices. They defeated smallpox with a staff of less than 3,500 people. They track diseases better than any one nation could do on their own. They've had their missteps from time to time but it is likley that if this organization didn't exist, it would have to be invented. It is like several organizations we never think about, things like the UNHCR, UNICEF agencies that regulate world airline traffic and the like. If they didn't exist in the U.N., they'd probably have to be invented.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14101886/ http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14100258/ Hezbollah continues to use people as human shields. Israel fires at sites that fire weapons at them but hits unintended targets. It's a no win situation.

Six Nations Crisis- “Canada’s Pandora’s Box?”
jdobbin replied to NativeCharm's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
This really doesn't offer any solution, does it? What if Canadians don't accept this? -
Yikes! A pretty horrible situation. That poor officer. These statements don't just come out of nowhere. Most alcoholics don't lash out with politcal statements that are so pointed. I have no idea how he can explain it away.
-
Canada doesn't need to steal it. They are letting Canadians drill it. I doubt the U.S. would directional drill into Cuban territory because it sets a precedent for other countries to do the same to the U.S.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14095881/ The discovery of high quality oil and gas off of Cuba has finally made American businesses question the embargo of Cuba.

I don't think the Iranian government has anything truthful to say. If I heard that from someone else, I may have taken note but Iran deserves no such consideration. We should ride them every time we can over the murder of a Canadian citizen.

I do not care who is happy or unhappy. I care about fair policy. If there is a fiscal imbalance, the only fair solution is to reduce federal taxes. Period. No ifs, ands or buts. The federal government should not be making cash handouts to the provinces to deal with this "imbalance" if it truly exists. If the provinces should need more money for their operations, the provinces should raise their own provincial taxes (or cut spending) and deal with the political fallout that would result. Just to be nit-picky on protocol, the CanWest linked article requires a subscription for access. The National Post, among many papers, have been really tightening up on what is available free in the paper. Some newspapers like the Winnipeg Free Press have no free content at all. Here is a link that appears to work: http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/news/st...a9f&k=65931 A lot of people say this fiscal imbalance is something the provinces have made up. Equalization of services is something the federal government *wants* to keep provinces from falling below certain standards when it comes to infrastructure, services and the like. There is *no* industrialized country that doesn't do it in some way.
-
Alberta once did receive generous equalization. It may once again receive equalization decades from now once its oil is depleted according to some experts. This article makes a good point that it is not province's money that they are talking about, it's Ottawa's. Harper will indeed make some Albertans mad but this isn't an NEP program.

130km of Lebanese coastline affected by oil slick
jdobbin replied to gerryhatrick's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I certainly think an oil slick does damage to everyone in the region. -
Atre Calgary people getting upset with the situtation? Wasn't there a hospital blown up there as part of cutbacks a few years ago?
-
It seems unlikely that equalization will end with Harper. Every industrialized has an equalization formula except the United States. The United States uses federal transfer programs instead.
-
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/newfoundland-labr...al-impasse.html The National Post and the Globe and Mail are saying the fiscal imbalance is something the provinces are just making up. http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/news/ed...39-bba803eb0c1b Who is going to end up unhappy when Harper makes a decision?
-
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/calgary/story/200...iscarriage.html I heard that a new children's hospital has gone up. Is it that Calgary is growing too fast or that people are not being directed elsewhere?

I know that whatever party t I got a letter like that from I'd be a little pissed.

Coming from a country that tortured and killed a Canadian journalist, I take this with a grain of salt.
