The message left on Guelph resident Dave Hudson’s voicemail on Election Day 2011 sounded official enough.
A recorded female voice claiming to be calling from Elections Canada told him his voting location had changed.
“This is an automated message from Elections Canada,” the voice said. “Due to a projected increase in voter turnout, your poll location has been changed … We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”
The message ends by urging voters to call a “hotline” at 1-800-434-4456 if they have any questions. The number is no longer in service. The same message in French then follows.
