And a huge reason why the death penalty, if instituted, will cost more than life in prison given all the appeals. Not much of a deterrant. I don't agree with the death penalty either.

And this is why he is now free, not because he is necessarily innocent but because his guilt was not proved. Certainly the police were wrong in doing what they did but they didn't knowingly railroad a man they knew to be innocent. That doesn't justify what they may have done but it is an important distinction.

Any accident investigator could have told this guy that when aircraft pull too much G the first failure is the tail section. The horizontal stabilizers fail, the tail is unloaded and the aircraft flips over on its back often resulting in one or both wings failing in negative G. This is the classic result when a non instrument rated pilot finds himself in cloud, becomes disoriented and winds up in a spiral dive. He pulls too much G trying to correct for the rapidly rising speed and the tail fails. If United 93 had been in an uncontrolled dive and someone was trying to recover, the failed tail is entirely consistent with this situation. It would have taken a skilled pilot familiar with heavy jet aircraft to recover without causing a structural failure, if it was possible at all.

No one knowingly convicts an innocent person. They believed in the persons guilt even if their methods have been suspect. Disclosure rules have changed drastically in recent years. Now there is very little that can be presented in court without it being disclosed to the defense beforehand. That is a big reason why it now takes much longer for cases to get to trial than in years past.

Who knows, it could be just you. Every era seems to see some sort of apocalypse coming. The people who lived through the first half of the last century went through the two most destructive wars in history and ended up living in the most affluent era in history. The better people have it the harder they seem to work at dreaming up things to worry about. One day they will be right.

Americans Staying Away in Droves
Wilber replied to ft.niagara's topic in Canada / United States Relations
I buy my return booze on the way down. It is much cheaper than in BC. When you count in exchange it is also cheaper than the duty free on the US side. I buy the stuff I drink in the US in the US. People who fly only get the same exemptions as the people who drive based on how long they were out of the country. -

No, if I buy something at a store in Washington there is no mechanism to get the state tax back. As an Alaska resident all I had to do was show my ID to the retailer and sign a form. What you say is true of the Ebay purchases I have made and you could probably avoid the state tax on a vehicle as long as you didn't register it until it was out of the country but I don't know for sure. Of course I have to pay PST and GST as soon as I bring it into Canada. For a Washington State resident all he has to do is take his receipts into the Canadian duty free where he crosses back into the US and he will get his tax refunded. -
President Bush Insults Canada Again
Wilber replied to BayLee's topic in Canada / United States Relations
The world calls bush a moron. Interesting though.44 Canadians have died in Afghanistan trying to clean up an American mess. bush totally disregards Canadas contribution and all you have to say is.. calling bush a moron is against the rules????? And of course you speak for the world. If you were one of those trying to clean up the mess you would have some credibility. According to those who are and post on this forum, they believe in what they are doing and couldn't do it without the resources the Americans provide. Bush may be a bit of a disaster as a President but no one can get to that position who is a moron. I understand he is quite charming in a social atmosphere. -
Americans Staying Away in Droves

When I was living in Alaska and shopping in Washington State, all I had to do was show my Alaska drivers license, another piece of ID with my Anchorage address, sign a piece of paper and I didn't have to pay state sales tax. As a Canadian shopping there I get no such consideration. Why should they when they come to BC. -
While it is only a snapshot, some of the JD Power initial quality ratings are interesting. The Chrysler 300C for instance scores the same as a Lexus IS250 and slightly better than the C Class Mercedes. Long term reliability and resale may differ but you have to wonder how much is perception and how much is fact.

Let's hope this government can, "make" a plan, and implement it. Let's hope.

What link? This is to a page of readers comments. When did they become facts? 'As far as I know the only way to extract oil from the tar sands is to use a lot of heat. Certainly the production of that heat should be made as environmentally friendly as possible but regardless it will have to come from fossil fuels as it does now or from nuclear reactors. Do the Liberals have some secret new process that they are going to let us in on or other secret non greenhouse gas emitting energy supply to provide that heat or do they think their own hot air will be sufficient? What did the Liberals do about meeting Kyoto over the last 10 years other than comming up with a plan or pass a motion that makes complying with Kyoto law when they have no power to do so. Why didn't they pass such a law when they did have that power? We all know the answer to that, don't we. Hell, any idiot can make a plan.
-
So charge them, but you would need some proof to do that.
-
Even if they are facts, none of them have anything to do the Kyoto Accord. So why didn't the Liberals do it?
-
What do we have here? Aside from the odd head case making threats that are 99% hot air (is there any evidence that even one made any attempt to make good on their threat) we have a group of celebs who go on stage and publicly trash someone they don't like. Some other folks who don't agree voice their displeasure buy taking their copies of said celebs music and publicly trashing them. Seems like a wash to me.
-
I think there will be. By presenting and passing a bill that commits the government to a schedule that all know is not attainable without destroying the economy, one has to wonder what the Liberals really believe in. They had ten years to reduce emissions by 5%, instead they increased by 25%. Now they want them reduced by 30% in 5 years. Too bad the country will have to go to the poles over a fairy tale.
-
It's the kind of thing that happens when people believe the pendulum has swung too far in one direction.
-
Most of the people who were calling in. Time will tell if they are typical.
-
It will be interesting to se how this plays out. Early response on talk radio around hear is running around 90% approval. Wonder if it means much.
-
Mr Dion is going to have to explain how he is going to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% in less than 5 years or send billions of the peoples money to other countries to pay for credits. I can hardly wait.
-
Why, he is just doing what all PMs have done, he is just honest enought to admit it.
-
Like what part of the Charter pertains to this?
-
All this talk of the Charter, what part of it deals with this anyhoo?
-
Based only on this article, it would seem rather dumb.
-
Well that just simply isnt true.As I said earlier celebs ( musicians) have mixed politics and music for decades and decades .Seems it is only the American right wing bigots and hate mongers and bible thumpers who seem to throw a tantrum and death threats around Think back to the famous Beatles records burning by those same ignorant American right wing idiots just because of something that was said Of course it's true, celebs who come out public on either side of the political spectrom take their lumps. That's fair. Some get carried away with their response. There is a lunatic fringe at both ends of the spectrum. Your comments are always so vitriolic that I honestly wonder about you. If you want to go out and buy a record or book and then go burn it, that's your business. If you take them out of schools and libraries or burn those which belong to other people, that's another matter entirely.
