  1. Just curious, did you put the words 'deeply' and 'fathom' in that sentence on purpose? Cause it's a nice subtlety if you did.
  2. Those nutbars chanting and blocking traffic are no more the left than the nutbars who call themselves 'the Base' are the right. I've been liberal all my life and I say that anyone who is against pipelines needs to Google Lac Megantic. I also say Trudeau left liberal principles behind when he bought a pipeline. That's not what government is for. There's two issues here. I'm convinced all those young white activists are all about their twist on environmentalism and are just piggy-backing on the Native issue because it gets more attention and makes them feel extra special. The Natives involved, well, that's between them and the government. That is one thing the government should be doing, dealing with whatever is going on there. And no, that's not a leftist thing. For all you know those protesting Natives are a solid bloc of conservatism.
  3. What's the matter with those idiots, conservatives, is that they can't see an inch beyond what they've been told on any topic. They will fall in lockstep and toes on the line they've been told to toe by whomever they see as the boss. Here's how it works for conservatives- you know that sign behind the cash register in every diner that says, "If you're so smart, how come you're not rich?". The other side of that sign says, "If you're rich, you must be smart!" and conservatives want to be seen as smart by agreeing with rich people. A conservative who loves to hunt and fish, for example, will be against environmental issues because that's leftist and wealthy people told him to toe the line.
  4. Liberals won for you every right and freedom you enjoy, and they fought against conservatives every step of the way. It's still happening. Gay marriags rights, drug law reform, womens right to safe abortion, all resisted by conservatives. The next one will be the right to assisted suicide. Liberals will win that right too, and they'll be opposed by conservatives. Again. Here it is in a nutshell... Liberal- We can make this better. Conservative- I liked it how it was before.
  5. Climate change over centuries is a good thing. For one thing, evolution makes genetic diversity happen. Every species, including homo sapiens, benefits from genetic diversity. When evolution stops stagnation sets in. Cheetahs in Africa are an example- they're inbred like a bunch of toenails to the point where they're incapable of adaptation. But this accelerated climate change is bad for every species on earth, plants, animals, everyone. We are one of the most adaptable, we'll survive, but many of us will suffer from it. It's already affecting people who live close to me. The increase in carbon dioxide dissolved in the sea water lowers the pH level slightly and certain shellfish aquaculture has become unviable because their shell formation is inhibited. This is in shallow water off Vancouver Island and people have been laid off because of it. It's affecting underground infrastructure in the Arctic too. The permafrost is changing.
  6. True, the climate has changed constantly since forever but the degree of change that normally happens over many centuries has now happened in mere decades. And one effect of global warming can be bitter winter weather events because of the change in the jet stream, and global warming can actually cause more snow because it encourages precipitation. It's not climate change but the rate of climate change that's causing the problems. And it's the rate that's man-made.
  7. The SS ordered their Zyklon B from Degesh and specified that it be supplied without the indicator, the foul-smelling additive that warned of it's presence. This was a problem for Degesh because their patent was on the indicator. They agreed to the demand after being offered a ten-year monopoly. There's lots of holocaust footprints. It's not just about eye-witness testimony.
  8. Not on the horizon, the substitute is right here right now. Electric technology is advancing at a geometric rate. Electric planes, ships, buses, all are either commercially viable right now or just on the doorstep. Of course it won't happen overnight and of course there'll always be a need for oil products but not all oil products are fuel.
  9. Sounds like there's no shortage of drama queens on both sides of the issue.
  10. Well, isn't that Olympic-quality backpedaling. You're in here spouting about how Islam is intrinsically hateful and hate-worthy and now that I'm asking for something specific, something that can be discussed, a clear statement from you about what it is about Islam and Muslims that you hate and all I can get is, "You worry about your position, I'll worry about mine." Say it. C'mon, tell me what you think about Islam and Muslims. Say it.
  11. Uh, that's not helpful. I'm trying to make sure I understand your position. Do you agree with what I said?
  12. What if the book can be cited to justify any and every atrocity people can commit on others? What if the book is used by dominant types to convince other, more easily led and easily influenced people, to do things they would otherwise never consider?
  13. Somewhere in Africa. Right. Okay, let's find the ground rules. I'm hearing you say that Jihadist terrorism is built into Islam, that all those radical fundamentalists and anti-American fanatics are just obeying the religious imperative that Mohammed laid on them. That sound right?
  14. If quoting the Koran is relevant in this 'religion of peace' controversy, does that open the door for quoting the Bible?
  15. Far as the law allows. Same as everything else in society.
  16. I agree about government not making those decisions except that city or municipal government, being charged with maintaining public order, needs to decide sometimes not to allow certain events to take place. It's part of not tolerating certain ideas, and this might be where we disagree most. I admit that there's some ideas I believe should not be tolerated, should not be expressed. Some ideas don't deserve to be seen as legitmate and worthy of consideration. I'd be dead-set against the government outlawing the expression, but I'm all for citizens doing whatever the law allows to suppress them.
  17. I agree with this with this caveat- nobody is required to rent that hall to someone who wants to use it to express abhorrent ideas. And the judge of what's abhorrent is each of us, including whoever rents out the hall. Also, any form of protest that's short of physical obstruction is on the table.
  18. Your first amendment rights begin and end with the words, "Congress shall make no laws...". The first amendment does not require anyone to tolerate loathsome ideas, it just says the government can't censor you.
  19. Free speech being freedom of government suppression applies to everyone but if you find what someone says offensive and you speak out against them, and do what you can to drown them out, you're just exercising your own right to free speech. I can believe in your right to free speech, as in the government can't suppress what you want to say, and still believe that nobody else is required to allow you to be heard. Like I said, it's a free society so you take your chances. It seems kind of oxymoronic to say that those people over there need to shut up because that guy over there has a right to free speech. If you piss off people enough that they protest when you speak up, that's your tough luck. Like I said, everyone has the right to not be suppressed or censored by the government. Beyond that, the marketplace makes the rules.
  20. The right to free speech is misunderstood by some people. It means the government can't censor you. It doesn't mean everybody needs to allow you to say what you think. If I say to someone, "Your opinion is a pile of crap and you need to sit down and shut up!" I'm not violating their right, I'm exercising mine. Nobody's right to free speech includes a right to a stage or an audience. It being a free society means you takes your chances and if you get enough people riled up that you can't be heard over the dissent it's all on you, not the dissenters.
  21. That just complicates the issue and it's easy to ignore if your agenda is better served by cherry-picking a single quote, out of context, from a long political career.
  22. I don't care a lot about what political parties do or don't. I was talking about small-l and small-c liberals and conservatives. Small-l liberals are active, often activist, as are most people on the left, where small-c conservatives are passive. They expect that a strong, firm-but-fair Daddy state will maintain order and all that's needed from citizens is obedience. Laws, for example- conservatives see most social problems as solvable by legislation. If you should do something, there needs to be a law that you must. If you shouldn't do something, there needs to be a law that you can't. Unfortunately, many of those shoulds and shouldn'ts are religious or moral and have no place in the law. Liberals, for the past while, have been engaged in tossing out bad laws. Gay marriage was the last cause, pot (and all drug) laws are the current one, and I predict assisted suicide will be the next. It's just another way liberals and conservatives are different. Liberals are all about individual rights, conservatives about designing society.
  23. Specifics? I can't think of what 'huge damage' Trudeau did to Canada.
  24. There does seem to be a new kind of cult of victimhood developed over the past while. I think it's a conservative thing, comes from a feeling of helplessness. One of the differences between liberals and conservatives is liberals, when they see something they don't like or disagree with, will take whatever action seems most likely to change it where conservatives will complain that it's happening. Liberals, simply put, do, and conservatives complain about what liberals do. If there's nothing specific to complain about, conservatives complain that liberals control the news media or they control the entertainment industry or they control the universities. This victimstance is common to groups who are unable to take action to improve their lot in life- they create a powerful, behind-the-scenes entity that's wielding a puppeteers control. Freemasons, Jews, liberals, whatever. It's not a new phenomenon, it just has a new, conservative face.
