For or against long gun registry?
CPCFTW replied to Alberta_Ford's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Lets get started on a knife registry instead. 1 in 5 people are likely to develop some sort of mental illness and look at what happened to that guy on the greyhound. A tragedy that could have been avoided if Vince Weiguang Li had registered his rambo knife. Then maybe we can register rope next? You can kill with rope right? -
Hard to cut taxes when hippies demand no cuts to their entitlements. The tfsa was a great way to provide a hidden tax cut that the hippies haven't figured out yet. Also taxes on consumption are far better for a society than taxes on income. If it wrrent for free trade, I would suggest we should be completely taxed on consumption with exemptions for necessities (energy, water, food, etc.). But with free trade, people will just buy their hdtvs and ipads across the border. I guess some sort of tax harmonization could be worked out.

Ottawa warns current health transfers unsustainable
CPCFTW replied to olp1fan's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
As long as private health care is banned, nurses are government employees. The doctor/hospital bills the government for the cost of employing nurses. Saying they aren't government employees is like saying Canada Post employees aren't government employees because it says "Canada Post" on their cheque instead of "Federal Government of Canada". -
You're missing the point, I would have had a reliable health plan already. And I would already have well over 100k saved up from that $3500/yr. Not to mention my parents would have a sizable amount banked. Hell, you could even force Canadians to hold those 50% of those funds in a "RHSP" (registered health savings plan) and only allow them to withdraw it for health purposes. Then pass any remaining assets onto dependents into their own "RHSPs". Just throwing ideas out there because the current model is unsustainable.

I would if I collected $3500 x my age. My family would also assist in that case. Cancer is horrible, and it's certainly possible that I will get it at some point in the future. But it shouldn't be society's burden to bear. I could also get a health plan which covers cancer and medical emergencies for far cheaper than $3500/yr. I'm sure cancer charities would also exist. Worst case, start a Canadian cancer group insurance scheme where every Canadian is insured for a certain percentage of cancer expenses (lets say 90%) up to a limit. This way, if you need to dump $1 million for treatment that will give you a 5% chance of survival, you'll at least have to muster up 100k yourself. People are mortal, no amount of money will make that go away.

http://www.fin.gov.on.ca/en/budget/ontariobudgets/2011/ch2h.html#c2_secH_chart23 $47.6B is spent on healthcare in Ontario by the provincial government per year (38% of government spending). There are 13.3 million Ontarians. That is $3578 per Ontarian. Would you opt out of Ontario health care for a $3578 cheque per year? I sure as hell would. I go to the Doc maybe twice a year for less than 30 minutes and I usually diagnose myself and just ask the doc to write me a prescription. Last I checked, doctors don't make $3500 per hour. Health cards need to have a usage limit. For example, after the age of 10, you shouldn't be able to go to a health clinic more than 6 times per year (without paying). Or give me my $3500/yr and let me opt out of the health care program (and make room for private health clinics). I will invest around $3000/yr of that money and have over $100-200k saved up for private treatment by the time I'm in my 60s and actually need to use that health care money. My capital gains and dividends can be taxed to generate more revenue for the people that want to remain in the system. Costs need to come down. They are ridiculous. If there's one thing all people will be greedy about, it is their health. Free health care is not sustainable.

Who is the greatest Prime Minister of all time?
CPCFTW replied to cybercoma's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
My mistake.. you had responded to a post which was a response to a post suggesting that Harper isn't as good of a leader as Pearson because he doesn't work with other parties as well. I guess the conversation has drifted away from that. -

My suspicion is that there is no reason for a majority government to compromise on the issues that you suggest Harper compromise with the liberals on. My suspicion is that this is just more bellyaching that Harper has a majority government and is making full use of the power that our electoral process bestowed upon him. My suspicion seems validated by the fact that you already suggested that Harper has adequately compromised during his minority governments. -

Do you seriously expect an answer your argument based on the absurd notion that Pearson and Harper's situations are comparable? There's not much compromising to do in today's politics... "Compromise" just means "borrow more money from China". -

Another decade? Canadian boomers are 45 to 65 years old. Get your facts straight. The real issue here is an entitled generation that already bankrupted Europe and the US. If a Canadian province wants to bankrupt themselves so that boomers (who already escaped the harsh realities of life through protectionism and borrowing from China) can go out with unlimited costs, then they are free to do so. And why do we keep talking about the HST? Last I checked provinces had income taxes too. -

He's had majority power for barely 6 months... He will have another 7.5yrs+ to cement his legacy imo. One thing that is often overlooked is the TFSA. Harper introduced this type of account, and the cap will be around 50k in 6 years. Canadians will have billions of personal tax free investments and savings in the future and people will look back at Harper as the man who engineered this Canadian wealth accumulation (there are already currently about 5 million TFSA accounts holding 19 billion in assets). -

You mean the evil corporation GM is investing in Ontario? How evil of them! Pretty simple how to bring manufacturing back to Ontario... cut the spending on entitlements, get rid of minimum wage (or don't place the entire onus of providing a minimum wage on the manufacturer), and start spending on bringing the evil job-creating corporations back. -
I demand less government because I know the crap that goes on in government and I know that it will continue to go on regardless of which party is in power. What's your suggestion for improving "transparency and accountability" in this case? The sitting government isn't allowed to read answers in QP? Talk about a useless partisan troll.

Yes blaming isn't a solution to anything... unless it's blaming the evil predator 1%ers and the pigs who protect them!!!! -
Nope. You don't think the government knows the issues that will be raised beforehand and prepares questions accordingly? Reading canned answers and failing to address questions is not unique to this government. Any politician worth his salt knows how to dance around a loaded question. Talk about complaining for the sake of complaining. QP isn't a presentations class... "No reading cue cards!!!" Maybe if you guys quit blowing smoke about nonsense like this, Canadians will listen to you guys when you actually have a legitimate bone to pick with the government. Canadians are going to be blinded to any legitimate scandal because you guys turn little things like reading a canned answer into the end of democracy as we know it.

Thirty years from now historians will unanimously agree on Stephen Harper. And if they don't, the Harper government will crush the puny socialist swine. -
What are you on about now? The opposition reads loaded written questions just as frequently, if not more frequently, than the government reads canned responses. Not that it matters since this has been how the HOC has always operated. This is the type of drivel that makes everyone ignore the cries of lefties. Talk about the boy(s) who cried wolf.

Yes I read it. Did you read my post in which I noted the only quotations that weren't a decade and a half old?
-
"Sleazebag" and "you already have her" are the best examples the red star could dig up in the last decade and a half? Wow Trudeau really did go too far! Thanks for posting!
