  1. What I said made no sense because it's a circular argument. Duhhh...sorry. The death penalty would stop repeat offences 100%. What the issue is here is the conscience of the living people exacting the death penalty. Once someone is dead, he's not suffering and it makes no difference to him. Incarcerating prisoners in a maximum security prison must cost the tax payers dearly. I heard in the order of 100k/year, correct me if I'm wrong. During that time, people are at risk daily caring for them. Prison violence does occur. Which is a greater tragedy, sentencing a technically innocent person, who probably in most cases has dirty hands too, or allowing totally innocent people to be mudered by repeaters out on parole? That's a tough one. As I said, in certain cases, the ultimate penalty should be put on the table. I'm sure there'd be volunteers to pull the switch on some of these characters.
  2. A private citizen makes statements. At what point would a federal government step in? Free speech?
  3. So you're older now? Sorry, bad sense of humor..... The death penalty is 100% effective in deterring repeat offenders. Your second point would be effective if it was in Canada, which we are discussing, or if you even backed yourself with facts, but is merely rhetoric without. This link illustrates the repeat capital offences in Canada. http://www.npb-cnlc.gc.ca/reports/pr101001_e.htm Liz, Don't go. Your posts are valuable to the thread and we don't bite. Our methods of discussing are varied, but all in all we are a happy bunch of banterers.
  4. Right. We all grew up and went through junior high school and dealt with bullies. Most of us don't get a gun and shoot people over it. I have no idea what puts that idea on the todo list of some young whacko like Cameron. Like I said before, give the justice department your address and let them know you've got a basement suite in your house for him when he's all rehabilitated. As far as educating myself, the kid brought a gun and tried to kill everybody. Did I miss something? Don't spout religion to people these days without giving old Allah a chance too, like in Iran, where they hang people for merely being queer these days. And what about the eye for an eye clause? What exactly was vigilante about my calling for the death penalty in cases like this one? There is a use for it and this case is a prime example. By the way, you're not the only one who's looked the wrong way down a gun barrel.
  5. Reality check!!!!!! When that phone rings, a lot of people HAVE to answer it. I've had people at my business completely tune me out halfway through a transaction to answer the sacred phone. I've gotton so I just leave them standing there and leave the room, rude for rude. I strongly suspect that while driving, the same people tune out the road.
  6. Probably doesn't have to step out of his office to do that, just look in a mirror. Here in Alberta too. ie; Nancy Betkowski or whatever her name is now. If I'm not mistaken, I thought even Ralph crossed the floor a long time ago?
  7. He needs a disclaimer to start this thread????? Say no more. He was a horny old fart, banging that young b*tch. That's a whole other saga.
  8. I don't think you get the big picture here. Bush makes policy based on Christian right rhetoric. Robertson, with Falwell, speak for the moral majority. "Only words" created the KKK, IRA, white supremecy movement, and ultimately al qaeda. Ironically, all based on religion. I'm not trying to incite fear, but rather demonstrate the seriousness of Roberton's statement. This goes far beyond freedom of speech, right up to inciting hatred and uttering threats. It is criminal activity as far as I'm concerned. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Any whacko with a tv camera and station can call other whackos to arms. He who owns the media owns the country. It's scary to think what might build from that broadcast. Until it does though, they're just the ramblings of one guy.
  9. And the 'Hit the nail on the head' award goes to Auggie 91!!!!!!
  10. Ralph will straighten you out on that....
  11. You're kidding, right?? I mean 9/11 was one thing. And we did send people to help during the rescue attempts and cleanup at the WTC. We did send troops and support to Afghanistan. And we had casualties there, some of them at the hands of our American friends. Despite that accident, I agree that the USA is our friend and ally. BUT, if your friend, duly warned of the consequences, and against all good judgement, chooses to stick his hand into a hornets' nest, are you going to stand there getting stung along with him??? If he chooses off a cliff, are you going to jump as well?? I for one am proud that we chose to say "No, we will not participate in this particular war", because I, along with millions of others, believe the war was based on lies and deceit, not to mention a healthy dose of hypocrisy. As time passes, more and more evidence seems to come forth supporting that opinion. Sorry, but I cannot support a war based on lies. (But I do admit that it's good to see Saddam gone.) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hand in a hornets nest? I don't think so. I think it's more like a friend who wants to go skydiving and wants you to come with him and help him open his parachute in case it he has trouble opening it. It's too soon to tell whether the US was right or wrong, and with any war, there's bound to be negative spins even if the victory is obvious. Context time: 2000<> dead soldiers? So What. Howmany people get killed every day in traffic accidents in the states. Here's a stat from 99 * Motorcycle crashes killed 2,537 in 1999 compared to 2,284 in 1998. * Fatalities in crashes involving large truck crashes dropped from 5,374 in 1998 to 5,203 in 1999. * Speeding-related traffic deaths rose from 12,477 in 1998 to 12,672 in 1999. http://www.dot.gov/affairs/nhtsa1200.htm The war is just a day at the office statistically.
  12. Don't be licking your lips and looking at us!
  13. Kind of an extreme attempt to tie the two together. It didn't work for me, but ok, I get it.
  14. This is Canada. Bring your religious beliefs, wear turbans on the force. We'll let you do anything you want. Hell, we'll even change the laws to suit you. Just don't interfere with the colonial federal government or the rights of the Frenchies and Ontarians. My sarcasm of the jour.
  15. Don't get carried away. There is nothing good about Bin Laden and using him in the same context as Robertson gets my hackles up a bit. Bin Laden has a track record of killing people like your sister and brother, had they been at the WTC, 9/11. Robertson is a mouthpiece and hasn't killed anybody. He's guilty only of making inflamed statements. I wonder if he'll be charged with making death threats under the criminal code?
  16. I've got no doubt what he meant. It was close to being outside the boundry. I got thick skin though, and BD is right about a couple things about me. 1. I do tend to see in black and white rather than grey. 2. I should expect to be worked over if I make bold statements. I'd just like the personal comments to be a little more respectful. I'm not here to trash anybody, just have some good healthy debates. A little humor is lost on some people around here too. What you see of me is what you get. No hidden agenda here.
  17. No Christian I ever knew would say anything like that. Sometimes the fundamentalist religious people from the states get a little to far outside for even me. I go with you guys on this one.
  18. The US Navy today announced that it has released a senior Al Quaeda terrorist after questioning him extensively for 27 days while being held prisoner aboard a US aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea. In a humanitarian gesture, the terrorist was given $50 US and a tank of gas for his 1962 Ford Fairlane automobile upon being released from custody. The photo below shows the terrorist on his way home just after being released by the Navy. New navy policy
  19. I'm not the most religious guy either, but I'm at ease with the opinion I have too.
  20. I had an interesting chat with a client of mine a few years ago. He is an archeoanthropologist. We didn't have much in common to talk about but I brought up the global warming subject. He said with all the studying going on, they don't know anything more at the end of the day than when they started because records of climate are too short to account for long term cycles. So I didn't feel too guilty buying my coal boilers after that.
  21. When I was growing up in the 70's, I truly believed that we'd never see another war. I thought humanity had grown past that. How naive of me. Your story is ok, but I think they are shooting nuclear bombs at each other, not bullets, and the townspeople are doomed anyway no matter who wins because of the fallout. In a time like this, when the States is involved in a war, they need all the support they can get, and deserve it. If any other major crisis develops in the world, and they start to lack resources to handle it, their choices will lessen. It could get real ugly, fast. China, Russia, North Korea? They could all be waiting in the wings for the States to weaken and then start something else. Guess who's in the middle? Us. With our government non-supporters and cerebral Ottawa types saying things like Iran has the same type of government as the States, only to a lesser degree. That makes me feel safe, having guys like that supporting our country.
  22. Right, we hang gays in North America regularly. I can appreciate that, but lets keep it friendly without the personal trash, ok? You can oppose whatever and say whatever you want. In real life, however, men of action get things done. If you merely stand there and oppose everything going on nowadays, I guess that's your right, but men have died so you can do it. That's a fact. And if you don't or can't appreciate that then your education hasn't done much for you. I'm Canadian all right. Born and still in Alberta. We're all North American and if I use the term us to describe our friends, I can. That's my right too.
  23. I don't know how it was before either. I strongly suspect that the whole jihad and terrorist thing is because there's so many young people out of work to begin with. That gives them the time to hang around the educators of the movements, who bring them into the fold, so to speak, with promises of who knows what. 40 virgins?
  24. I can live with that.
  25. Fairly embellished statement imo, but; How should I know? It's not over yet. We certainly hope in the end that something good comes out of it. There are good things going on over there. It really depends on who you listen too. What I do think is that Saddam needed to be removed, his sons stopped, and his henchmen rounded up and dealt with so the people of Iraq can live. It's not the nice people over there doing the killing. It some a**holes with warped beliefs of standing up against the western style of freedom merely to oppose things. If those radicals would put down their guns and go get a job and be useful for a change, things would settle down there tomorrow.
