Quebec Man Arrested For Withholding Phone Password
Derek 2.0 replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
And those "hundreds of people" are either committing crimes or are holders of an RABC permit, valid for their local remote crossing........of course now, said posts are manned 24/7 (often remotely at night) or are in the process of or have been closed. -

Without a doubt, in the past, the borders were far more porous, with the Canadian/US border having more of a focus on custom levies, and in the case of waterways (like you mentioned) public safety/SAR......... Today is far different, and though far from perfect, is still hardly the US-Mexico gong-show. -

Yes and no. Pre 9/11 the ability to observe and collect such information was certainly present, but said information was often underutilized.....in essence, the left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing............. -

Yes indeed, post 9/11 and being implemented in 2006, all maritime traffic is tracked in both North American waters and approaches to, by not only the various border and transport agencies of Canada/United States, but also security agencies and the military....in the case of the military, the expansion of the NORAD mandate and the creation of USNORTHCOM....... -

Then the solutions are simple: 1. Don't cross borders 2. Don't cross borders with your personal electronic devices 3. If you cross borders with your electronic devices, ensure you don't have anything encompassing criminal activity on said devices. 4. If you cross borders with something criminal on your device, roll the dice and gamble the CBSA agent doesn't bring you into secondary and asks to inspect your electronic device. I don't see the issue here...... -
So, Trudeau feels the Harper Tories are using fear as a political tool........but he will still support (popular) Bill C-51, and is open to supporting the extension of the Iraq mission against ISIS........

Slow Clap BC. The Left Lane is for PASSING!
Derek 2.0 replied to Boges's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Clearly you can't, but for hope that the drivers behind are attentive. So in this case, we're asking drivers to be responsible for automation that is forced upon them...........As I asked before in this thread (with no response), how many have ever had a dropped call from a cell, or their home computer freeze? By themselves, such faults are a pain in the ass, but don't effect my (or others) safety...............How about a dropped call to my automated car just prior to going through a traffic light or the car's main computer freezing with traveling on the freeway? I have/had cars with park assist, though handy, they're far from reliable.....scuffed curbside tires and dings in the bumper from the odd shopping cart tend to prove, to me, that we're far from automated cars.........as I said, let me know when they've developed golf carts that can operate safely well automated. -

Hence, as I said, the greater usage of bandwidth. -

Unless your home is a Winnebago and you're crossing international borders with it, I don't see your point......clearly rules and (expectations to) rights differ between domestic policing and the crossing of borders, as such, so to do the laws governing the CBSA and Canadian domestic police. -

Sure, but if I go around a blind corner in my automated car, playing on my laptop, eating or having a snooze, and it hits a deer, how does said car warn all the automated cars behind me at speed, sans modern telecommunications? Hence bandwidth...And of course, who's better situated to take/regain control in such scenarios? The person driving or the person playing on facebook in his or hers automated car? ----- Also, what does the automated car decide in a scenario when faced with a kid on a bike going into traffic? Hit the kid? Go into oncoming traffic? Or into a parked car or ditch? Slam on the brakes and get rear-ended, causing a chain reaction? And then, who or what is liable? What if there is a power outage and intersection controls fail? Are driver-passengers suddenly forced to take control, and in turn, is there an expectation for drivers to be attentive at all times in their automated cars? Or would "drivers" of automated cars be allowed to have a few drinks or play on a laptop? How does the automated car decide if a person on the sidewalk waving their arms is somebody greeting their friend across the street or a cop stopping traffic in an emergency or a BC Hydro worker at a sudden downed power line? As I said, let me know when they develop and distribute automated golf carts......... -

Ahh, but LIDAR, much like LAMPS before it, also has its limitations.........like a blind corner on the Sea-to-Sky hwy.......your "simple radio transmissions" are useless to cars around a blind corner or in a tunnel for example. Your automated cars very much so will require the use of satellite and cellular transmissions, and in turn, bandwidth.... -

Sure, the probability of a nuclear war happening (as suggested by the moving forward of the doomsday clock closer to midnight) is greater than magical cars run by magical technology that does not exist........Yet, in my opinion, neither is at all likely. -

No, my conclusion in based upon real world, present and projected, bandwidth usage...............yours is as grounded in reality as my flying Jetson's car. -

Proven wrong? Oh, like when you said I'd be wrong with oil returning to above $50 bbl by this Spring? By all means, bookmark it and let me know when they have automated golf carts...... -

Perhaps, as there is a greater chance I'll require a bunker one day then contented with automated cars coming into widespread use.......as I said, let me know when they can manage a golf course. -

Little data? How little? Your cars, as said numerous times, will have to not only be in constant contact with traffic signals but other cars on the road.......UAV's do use a large amount of data, but UAVs are flown in restricted airspace and don't have to contend with rush hour traffic, idiot kids on bikes or a mattress in the middle of the road....... One such car will be required to transmit and receive constant information to operate safely with other such cars.......If the USAF is unable to operate dozens of UAVs within x amount of square miles with current or near term projected technology and bandwidth demands, you couldn't replace all the cars in Maple Ridge with automated cars.......let alone an entire city, country or the world. Its fantasy. -

Derek 2.0 replied to Boges's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Overcome by what? Magic? If the USAF is faced with growing shortfalls in bandwidth, for a requirement to operate UAVs numbered in the hundreds, where is all this extra bandwidth going to come from to meet the requirements of just one small city of automated cars and traffic infrastructure? As I said, science fiction for it to be in widespread usage...........let me know when they can manage a golf course or theme park.....until then, keep dreaming. -

Slow Clap BC. The Left Lane is for PASSING!
Derek 2.0 replied to Boges's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Traffic lights, stop signs, yields etc will all have to be in constant contact with not only your car, but every other car on the road........Ford, Tesla, BMW etc can't program your car to predict traffic light changes. -

And yet your cellphone doesn't have a requirement to transmit and receive a fraction of the required data to allow a car to talk to intersections and other cars on the road with you.......Have you ever had a dropped call? Imagine your car dropping a call from the oncoming red light and an automated garbage truck is going through the intersection? -
Slow Clap BC. The Left Lane is for PASSING!
Derek 2.0 replied to Boges's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
But not my point.......self driving cars will have to communicate with every intersection and every other car on the road......hence bandwidth.
