Out of Afghanistan - into Darfur?

Jack Layton and Stephane Dion babble on about sending "Peacekeepers" to Darfur - getting back to what Canada "has traditionally done". What these gentlemen fail to realize is that you cannot be a Peacekeeper if there is no peace to keep. Here's the latest from Darfur:

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Ten African Union soldiers were killed and dozens were missing after armed men launched an assault on an AU base in Darfur, the worst attack on AU troops since they deployed in Sudan's violent west in 2004.

The AU called it a "deliberate and sustained" assault by some 30 vehicles, which overran and looted the peacekeepers' camp on Saturday night.

Sudan's army blamed Darfur rebels for the strike on the Haskanita base, which was mainly manned by Nigerian soldiers and military observers from other nationalities.

This sort of talk is indicative of one of two things: either they are profoundly ignorant of international relations and don't realize that peacekeeping is different from peacemaking, which is a euphemism for hot war; or they are dishonest to the core and are just trying to lead a bunch of ignorant lefties around by the nose, as usual.

Well, there will have to be a lot of killing to create peace.

Peace is a difficult commodity to find when the goal of the enemy is to kill all who stand in their way.

Another part of the world where negotiation will be of little value. Perhaps even less value than life.

Good point - what would they say when the bodies of Canadian soldiers start coming home from Darfur ?
