Republican Senator Ted Stevens indicted.

http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/07/29/america/senate.php

Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska, the longest-serving Republican senator in U.S. history and a figure of great influence in Washington and near legendary status in his home state, was indicted Tuesday on federal corruption charges.

Stevens, 84, is charged with seven counts of falsely reporting income, related to renovations on his home and gifts he has received. The charges arise from an investigation that has been under way more than a year in connection with the senator's business relationship with a man who oversaw a project to remodel his home, nearly doubling its size.

I haven't seen any recent polling from Alaska. I have no idea if a criminal conviction will be an obstacle to Stevens getting elected.

A new Star Tribune Minnesota poll released yesterday shows a 13-point jump in support in the last month for Democratic comedian-turned-politician Al Franken, who now has his first clear lead, 43 percent to 34 percent, in the much-watched race against Minnesota incumbent Republican Sen. Norm Coleman.

The Star Tribune poll also shows support for the relatively low-profile campaign of Independence Party candidate Dean Barkley at a high watermark of 18 percent, with most of his support drawn from Coleman, in what may be an indication of local unhappiness with Washington in general and Republicans in particular. Franken continues to lead Coleman, though, in a hypothetical two-candidate matchup.

Another Republican senator to go down in flames? Must make some of the Republicans wonder how bad it will get.

An unnamed GOP strategist now thinks the GOP will lose between 6 and 8 Senate seats based on the current economic crisis. That moves the Dems to within reach of a filibuster proof majority. On top of that, McCain's pulling out of Michigan leaves some vulnerable House members without the money, coattails and energy a national race brings with it. This is the Bush legacy. He is to Republicans what Carter was to Dems.

It is starting to feel like that, huh? Looking forward to seeing the new Cook Report.

Some of the commercials out are attacking the Republicans mercilessly. The ones I've seen in Minnesota against Coleman and against their 3rd District rep Paulson are pretty strong.

Some of the Republicans have to be squirming about it the possible outcomes.

The political landscape in Minnesota has changed.

http://www.startribune.com/politics/nation...iD3aPc:_Yyc:aUU

Rep. Michele Bachmann's controversial remarks about the possible "anti-American" attitudes of Barack Obama and other Democrats continued to inflame debate in Minnesota U.S. House races on Monday.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a day after denouncing Bachmann's statements as something that "dishonors" her office, arrived to campaign for DFLer Ashwin Madia in the Third District, and predicted victory for Democrats across the state.

Meanwhile, reports indicated that national Democrats will pour $1 million into the Sixth District race, and the state DFL pledged stepped-up efforts there as well.

I checked out the Cook Political Report and Bachman's comments have changed how many Minnesotans feel in the 6th District. It is now a tossup seat.

A video of her smooching Bush.
