“There is a group of soldiers from the Royal 22nd with us today who will represent Canada abroad. They were greeted by most of the Members of the National Assembly, except for an important group from the second opposition party who remained seated,” Mr. Couillard noted.

The PQ demanded that Mr. Couillard withdraw his comments in the midst of a heated debate in which party House Leader Diane Lemieux accused the minister of lying and acting disgracefully.

“There are people here who are personal friends of soldiers in Afghanistan or elsewhere. You can't determine what the MNAs are thinking because they are either sitting or standing,” Ms. Lemieux said.

When the motion supporting the troops was presented later, Action Démocratique du Québec member Robert Deschamps was absent, as was PQ member Camil Bouchard and a few of his colleagues. Another PQ MNA, Maxime Arseneau, voted for the motion, but remained seated as others stood to applaud the visiting officers who were still in the gallery.

Opposing the war is no excuse for the lack of respect shown by the PQ to soldiers from their own province about to leave for Afghanistan. No class. I wonder how many of them will join anti-war protesters in a march on June 22 just as the Van Doos gather to say farewell to friends and family. The media will be watching.

And is no excuse for lack of patriotism.

Actually, it is. There are literally hundreds of valid reasons to show a lack or, or opposition to, "patriotism".

But it is not an excuse for rudeness and disrespect to the soldiers.

You (and I) are lucky enough to live in free countries that provide a modicum of good government. Actually, quite a bit of good government. Lack of patriotism = ingratitude.

If your not a patriot to ones country, then you are a cowardly traitor.

Geez, now I'm gonna have to change my moniker to 'Cowardly Traitor'

Sign me up for traitor then. I'm not patriotic to anyone but myself and the people I choose to care about. The whole idea of nationality is dead. It's time we all get over it and start living as people, not citizens...

I don't know about Canada or any other country, but the idea of nationality is alive and well here.

Does your vision of 'good government' encompass the absolute right of any citizen to take a dissenting view, and express that dissenting view in public?

I am entitled to many rights as a citizen, and obliged to undertake certain repsonsibilites.

Being 'grateful' is not part of either.

The government should do something.

You are correct. Now having these rights, isn't that something to be grateful for?

That's called having a civil society, a necessary condition for a stable democracy. The lack of one is why countries such as Pakistan and Russia have elections, but unless brutally governed tend to implode from lack of discipline.
