Saskatchewan threatens to Sue Federal Government

Recommended Posts

Further, you never bothered to respond to my other point, which was that the B.C. and Sask budgets were mere fractions of the Ontario one, so your remark on B.C. and Sask being gouged by the Feds to pay for the Quebec largess is also inaccurate.

So you're saying that in addition to British Columbia and Saskatchewan, Harper screwed Ontario in order to squander billions on Quebec. Sure, I'll buy that. Thanks for pointing out that he screwed even more provinces.

Sask.'s equalization challenge uphill battle: law prof

An expert on constitutional law says he's entirely sympathetic to Saskatchewan's position, but the province will face tough sledding in its plan to take the federal government to court over equalization.
But University of Ottawa law Prof.

Errol Mendes said Saskatchewan will have a difficult time because that section is viewed as "non-justiciable," meaning the court can't adjudicate on it.

Thomas Courchene, a Queen's University professor of economic and financial policy who has written extensively about Saskatchewan's plight under equalization, agreed Thursday that the province faces an uphill battle because the equalization provisions are seen as non-justiciable.

This fight will go years beyond the provincial election that Premier Lorne Calvert is expected to call for the fall.

You're right it will go on a long time. There could be appeals and appeals of those appeals. It probably won't help Harper's re-election bid either.

It has generally been easier for a provincial premier to run against the prime minister than vice versa.

In your world, he screwed everyone.

No, Quebec did just fine. That's why the Bloc is propping up the Conservatives.

No, it is not the reason the Bloc are supporting the Conservatives, on the budget at least.

The bloc are doing it for two reasons.

First, it is their turn since none of the Opposition Parties want an election. They all have to find weak excuses for supporting the Tories in turn so they won't be seen as the ones who forced Canadians to the polls, again.

Second, the Bloc is in deep, deep, shit in Quebec. An election so soon after the PQ massacre would be disastrous.

According to a number of the polls in the last weeks, the BQ vote has recovered while the Tory vote has dropped. In any event, why would the BQ vote against the budget when Quebec did well by it. The BQ has gotten almost all the credit for it and the Tories have received very little credit for it.
