So why accept bases if they think the Americans would flee? You are going against yourself!

the entry in NATO was seen as a precursor of entry in EU. Something to gain the trust of Western Europe, and investors. something of a trick, if you wish

And it was long before the invasion of Iraq, and problems with Middle East.

American bases are seen as an argument against Russia, but it seems that is not strong enough.

but people are divided, some resent Russia, some fear it, some like it, some are afraid that this makes a possible battleground between the two superpowers.
