Alot of them may be non-white, but fully Westernized. I've work with quite a few visible minorities that are more 'Canadian' than I am most days.

I never made any pronouncements about whether they were westernized or not, didn't even infer it. But if a person comes from China, India The Phillipines, or Pakistan, their culture IS different than ours, and since you mention it, you have no evidence to suggest these people would be westernized, and the evidence suggests otherwise.

Regarding your other point, here is a link that shows out of the top five nations where people come from, only number 5 is predominately white.

I'm so racist, I consider any one not a member of my immediate family to be non white. The people in the block around where I grew up....token westernised non whites.....Europe? Entirely non white and that goes double for Glasgow......

Great, another immigration thread. And once again, the usual suspects will come out of the woodwork and blame all of the ills in Canada, from rising cancer rates to dying bees and global warming, on immigrants.

And as usually here is August gnashing his teeth and bemoaning how we're all so concerned about the lovely immigrants, who bring nothing but good to Canada - as long as they stay out of Quebec, of course. If immigrants were coming into Quebec in such numbers they threatened to sweep away August's beloved Quebecois ethnic nationalism self-love fest he and the rest of his amis would be out in the street beating immigrants and burning down their homes. We've already seen the most knee-jerk anti-immigrant stances in the country coming from French Quebecers, despite the fact they are getting far, fewer immigrants than English Canada, and despite the fact the Quebec government deliberately chooses those who speak French.

Incidentally, in per capita terms, we accepted more immigrants in the early 1900s than we do now.

Incidentally, you used to accept a lot more immigrants in Quebec too. How about you go back to that? How about we triple immigration into Quebec to match what's coming into Ontario and see how you and your friends cope?

The term "net immigrants" is a pet term August uses to try and pretend immigration is smaller than it is. He subtracts all the Canadians who leave Canada to get this, and blithely disregards the fact this only makes the problems of social and cultural disruption worse.

Canada, Australia and the US are dynamic societies because they view immigration in pragmatic terms.

What exactly does that mean? It's another vacuous expression that has no meaning. "Dynamic societies". It sounds so good but how does that differ from countries which don't have immigration? Are they all deadly dull or what?

It is a credit to our societies that we allow individuals from around the world to come and live here and pursue their dreams in their own way.

Except in Quebec, of course.

I have no problem with our levels of immigration in terms of numbers. Many Canadians are stand-offish and even biased towards first generation immigrants. The beauty of immigration though, is that second generation immigrants (Canadians by now, actually) have been schooled in our Public System - they might look a little different, but they speak without accents and go about life as the rest of us do. I personally struggled a bit with whether I was "racist". I found out that I wasn't - simply because once New Canadians went though our melting pot and the second generation popped out, I didn't care one iota about the color of their skin or where they came from. If anything, I was more interested in learning about their family history. I am one of the people who are a bit stand-offish with new Canadians who can't communicate very well.

Having said all that, we have to ensure that:

1) Our schooling systems - public and private, always take a "melting pot" approach. For example, if a Private School only taught kids in their native language - that would be bad. Shariah Law in Ontario - bad!

2) We also cannot turn a blind eye to cultural aspects that are bad for Canada. Jamaica for example, has a population similar to Toronto yet they had over 1500 murders in 2006 - over 20 times Toronto's rate. Crime is rampant and there is a cultural history that encourages a single mother/many fathers extended family. Such a country requires a different level of scrutiny for its immigation. One size does not fit all but political correctness dictates that we cannot discuss these aspects. The process should not bar immigration from Jamaica (or other countries) for in fact, it is for precisely those reasons that people want to leave other countries for a better life......but we owe it to ourselves and our New Canadians to select those that clearly have the desire and committment to earn a living and better their lives. There are simply too many good people waiting to get in....and to waste even one "ticket" on a questionable entrant does a dis-service to those waiting in line......and I apologize for "piking" on Jamaica.

Ok since I am an expert in immigration and demographics in Canada, I will say that off my memory you may be right.

I think it's now at half and half. Half of immigrants are elderly from mainly 'white' parts of Europe. Example, my neighbour is Scottish but is old and retired. My other neighbour is German and old and retired. Have lived here about 50 years and are Canadian. If you hear a very old person calling a radio station the chance is very good that they will have a mild British, Irish accent or such.

The Trudeau/Liberal immigrants are mostly from the thrid world and visible minorities coming mainly from China, India, and Pakistan (in that order).

Been to hindi weddings, been to chinese weddings, been to Italians and Irish too...I prefer Italian quite frankly. Hindi weddings have great food but the drinking is in secret, Chinese weddings have food, but the gambling is tense, Irish weddings have crap food but the drinking is everywhere while Italian weddings have food, drink and girls.........

And italians weddings have obscene amounts of food , and if one has not gone to one, dont eat for three days before. Or, only eat one or two bites of the 7 course that come. And dont forget, two hours later the biggest sickest most beautiful laden dessert table opens. Yea more food.....rrrrrraaaaallllpppphhhh !

Been to authentic Chinese wedding? I did ,and sat at a table with all CDN born timid mouses. They kept asking the waiters, whats this whats that....waiter didnt speak english. I was laughing.

I just kept putting food on my plate and saying this is good. What is it then, told them I dunno, but its tasty so what do I care what it is?

I love all the angsting over whether we're "racist" or "bigotted" or whatever...meanwhile the little brown folk we are all so concerned about loving as fellow human beings are all too helpful in allowing that we are in fact bigotted and that if we really want to change ourselves, we'll adapt ourselves to them instead of the other way around. What a milquetoast culture the west has turned into...half our time spent apologizing for the past and the other half worrrying about how best to kill our own culture.
