Guthrie Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 fascinating article, if you aren't signed up for Salon you'll have to watch a commercial to get to it Salon How Bush helped the GOP commit suicideA new study shows that unless the Democrats self-destruct, they could walk into the White House in '08 -- and might hold it for years. By Gary Kamiya Democrats should give two cheers for George W. Bush. He and his political mastermind, Karl Rove, dreamed of achieving a permanent Republican majority. Instead, his disastrous presidency has dealt a devastating blow to the GOP, one from which it may not recover for many years. That's the inescapable import of a major study of American voters' values and attitudes by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, released March 22. The study finds that voters have turned dramatically away from the GOP since Bush took office. Iraq, of course, is the single biggest reason for this. (A separate Pew poll, released on March 26, shows that 59 percent of Americans want their congressional representatives to support a bill calling for U.S. troops to withdraw from Iraq by August 2008, with only 33 percent opposed.) But even more troubling for Republican strategists is the fact that underlying attitudes and beliefs are trending against them. The study's implication is that the GOP, especially in its current far-right incarnation, was facing serious structural, long-term problems anyway, and that Bush delivered the coup de grâce. ... guyser Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 I doubt , on any real level , if any of the GOP bigshots even care. Perhaps those that have years of political ambition might, but the rest of them specifically the older ones, do not. Something about counting all of ones money and realizing there is enough to do anything makes them happy. Got to think Cheney is particularly happy. IIRC , his net worth prior to becoming the VP was in the neighbourhood of $2-5M. Now? Ouch he is upwards of $60-70M. Great gig if you can get it. Even better if you can steer correctly and avoid any impartiality. Quote
Liam Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 I think Bush will be for Democrats what Carter was for Republicans: an effective punching bag whose "legacy" they will be able to pull out and punch around for at least a decade. The biggest two differences is that: 1) Carter was actually a very smart guy, and 2) he has character that shone through once the weight of the office was lifted from him. He hasn't been a perfect ex-president and he isn't universally loved, but most Democrats and quite a number of Republicans know he is a good man at heart. I can't imagine Bush's reputation can be rehabilitated even enough so that Republicans will ever want his name mentioned in public again. Quote
B. Max Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 Of course the dems polling shows that's not really true, which is why they don't do it. They can't even get the congressional votes from the dems for it. So they have in stead tacked a huge amount of pork onto the military funding bill and attached ridiculous conditions to it. Conditions designed, that would see congress micro manage the war. They ran on getting the troops out of Iraq not pork and micro management. By the time 08 rolls around the people will be wised up to these phonies.
