jdobbin Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 It was just this past week that I said that if people in Louisiana felt that Blanco was to blame for the poor performance in the Katrina, they should look to remove her. It looks like that will happen now and she announces she is stepping down. http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.d...NGNEWS/70320017 BATON ROUGE – Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco will not run for re-election this fall. She summoned staff and Cabinet members to the Governor’s Mansion at 4 p.m. today to inform them before making the announcement public on live television tonight. Blanco’s representatives called television stations seeking airtime for shortly after 6 p.m., a highly unusual request that signals a major development. I've pointed out earlier that the reason many think she was first elected is because many Republicans and conservatives did not want to vote for the Republican candidate who was of east Indian heritage. Ray Nagin, also a favourite of Republican braying in Washington was re-elected because of Republican and conservative support in the city of New Orleans. Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Nagin was a Republican turned Democrat for political opportunity....non-story. Blanco blew it big time and is afraid to face the music at the polls. Buh-bye Blanco! Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

Both the man and the party say it isn't true. Quote

They had more of a problem with Vietnam Era hero and baby-killer John Kerry.....same thing applies for mayoral elections, and New Orleans has a high body count each year. Didn't know any baby killers ran in New Orleans. I guess that if Republicans in Washinton complain about New Orleans government being incompetent, they can blame their Republican brethren in New Orleans. Quote

bush_cheney2004 Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Been there. Good....and being from Winnipeg, you would know all about high crime rates.....there's your votes for Ragin' Nagin. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

Compared to any city in the U.S., Winnipeg's rates are a fraction of the U.S. rates. Enlighten me on the rates of your major city. And you have no idea who I vote for. Quote

jdobbin Posted March 21, 2007 Author Report Posted March 21, 2007 Riiiiiight....."Republicans" is a euphemism for "white people" in New Orleans. Voter breakdown had more Caucasians voting against Nagin. Most of the African American vote went Nagin. The conservative and Republican according to exit polls went mostly to Nagin tipping the polls his way by 3%. Quote

jdobbin Posted March 21, 2007 Author Report Posted March 21, 2007 Exit polls mean nothing...just ask John Kerry. I suppose the writing was on the wall with Nagin's re-election. No incumbent has been defeated since 1946. Still, one can't help think the balance was tipped if you go simply by census districts that traditionally vote Republican. Quote

Some folks may read it that way, but voter turnout (38%) and Nagin's shifting post-Katrina base have a lot more to say about it. Voters do not tip elections unless the stats are presented to make it appear that way. It was an election....Nagin won. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
