The Conservative party has warned its members that a federal election campaign could start within days, in an internal letter that makes an "urgent" appeal for donations.

Despite Prime Minister Stephen Harper's assurances that he does not want an election, party heavyweights are warning supporters that anything can happen after the federal budget is tabled Monday.

"We need to be ready to campaign within the next week," said the note, sent to party members Thursday.

"Without your help, we may need to cut back on major parts of our campaign plan. That's why I'm making an urgent appeal today to our most loyal supporters."

Just a marketing ploy?

Yeah, back when I was in high school the Conservatives would constantly send me mail and phone me to see if I could donate money because an election could be held at any time.

We shouldn't buy too much into that, as it's probably more or less meant to bring up more money for a campaign that may happen.

Of course they are asking for money.

It could end up becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Nobody wants an election, but ....

The Liberals are getting ready just in case.

The Conservatives are ready just in case.

The NDP have already started running *election style* ads.

We are more and more likely to see an election by the end of the spring.

They've been doing it all year, they and all parties are always looking for money.
