crazymf Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseacti...eoid=1673372459 I find this appalling to think that natural wildlife is treated this way. Catchme Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 So it was put out by some church group to mock the NFB, personally I question what purpose a church group would have in doing such a thing! BTW Ya all should see the NFB's "Being Cariboo", to see what kind of good work the NFB actually does! Quote When the rich wage war, it's the poor who die. ~Jean-Paul Sartre
kimmy Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 I doubt it was actually created by an actual church. I suspect "First Church of Christ, Filmmaker" was intended as a gag or something. If by some chance this was created by a church group, perhaps the message was something along the lines of "drugs are bad, mmmkay?" -k {lighten up. It was hilarious. } Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)
Catchme Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 It was created by a church, and no, I do not think it was funny, it was insulting to the very fine work that the NFB does. Quote When the rich wage war, it's the poor who die. ~Jean-Paul Sartre
kimmy Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 It was created by a church, and no, I do not think it was funny, it was insulting to the very fine work that the NFB does. Why do you think that a real church made this? And why don't you recognize that this is just a parody for comic purposes, not an attack on the NFB itself? -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)

Because comedy has long been used for propaganda purposes, just because it comes in a comedic format does not mean it is not insulting and denigrating the NFB. One can use comedy to promote racism, misogyny, hatred and war fare actually. Why do you see it as just being funny? Quote When the rich wage war, it's the poor who die. ~Jean-Paul Sartre
Argus Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 It was created by a church, and no, I do not think it was funny, it was insulting to the very fine work that the NFB does. Why does the NFB exist? Why do we need them? Why do I have to pay for them? What value do they contribute to Canada? kimmy Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 I googled it and researched to see if the credited church did do it, and found yes they did. Prove it. Show me your evidence that this was produced by a real church. I won't believe it until I see it with my own eyes. Because comedy has long been used for propaganda purposes, just because it comes in a comedic format does not mean it is not insulting and denigrating the NFB. One can use comedy to promote racism, misogyny, hatred and war fare actually. All of this might be true. However, in this instance I believe the intent was comedy, not any malice against the NFB. In fact, I'd suggest that this parody of the Hinterland Who's Who vignette seems to be a tribute to the lasting appeal and widespread recognizeability of the original vignettes. This website affirms that for Canadians of a certain age, the Hinterland Who's Who vignettes are well remembered and widely cherished: Most Canadians who had television in the 1960s or 1970s will remember it — the haunting strains of a lone flute, the trademark theme of Hinterland Who’s Who. The series of 60-second vignettes was created to educate the public about this country’s native wildlife through excellent film footage, natural sounds, and relaxed narration.... Then there is Hinterland Who’s Who’s cultural influence. The series’ musical theme and relaxed style became so well known that they have been used in TV parodies of some non-wildlife species, including politicians, and in the 2002 film Men With Brooms. Parodies? Indeed. This page from the same site compiles a number of other parodies of the Hinterland Who's Who vignettes: http://www.hww.ca/media.asp?mcid=4 Funny, they don't seem particularly offended that the vignettes have been parodied. Why do you see it as just being funny? Because it begins with what seems to be genuine content, then subtly moves to an absurd conclusion, all while maintaining the deadpan seriousness and calm demeanor of the classic "Hinterland Who's Who" NFB vignettes which it references. It transfers widely held stereotypical behaviors of chronic substance abusers to insects, to humorous effect. -k {ps, ask Black Dog to explain the "knock-knock" joke for you.} Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)
White Doors Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 Catchme is according to her a veteran of Canada's armed forces. She accused them of deliberately killing civilians in Afghanistan to inflate 'taliban kills' but gets offended on the NFB's behalf over a parody. just an fyi to all.
