crazymf Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 CNN -- Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani has taken the first step in a 2008 presidential bid, filing papers to create an exploratory committee, Republican sources tell CNN. And he blamed the troops for missing explosives before the 2004 election. Quote Conservative Party of Canada taking image advice from US Republican pollster: http://allpoliticsnow.com
Liam Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 Don't get me wrong, I would love to see the GOP move to the center on social issues, but Rudy hasn't got a shot. Even if he manages to secure the GOP nomination, Christian fundamentalists would stay away from the polls on election day. Aside from being pro gay marriage and pro choice, Rudy had an affair while married and while mayor of NYC. And he dumped his first wife through a TV interview. The Democrats would love to run against Rudy. All it would take to win is to remind "Christian" voters who this guy is and Rudy's support would evaporate. Quote
crazymf Posted November 15, 2006 Author Report Posted November 15, 2006 Yes to all that. But... everybody loves Rudy because of his excellent handling of the situation during 911 when the President was nowhere to be seen. That's got to count. However, that is a good quality in a leader. Also, I believe Rudy was a fairly unpopular guy in New York in the years leading to 911 because he made a hard choice to clean up that city. I remember instances of the cops being fairly tough on the citizens. My point is that he's a good administrator and not scared to make tough decisions. That's a great quality in a leader. He reminds me of Ralph in an abstract way. I do not think Rudy would be a strict 'party line' kind of guy. Black Dog Posted November 16, 2006 Report Posted November 16, 2006 Umm, maybe you could see it that way I suppose. However, that is a good quality in a leader. That's my point, though: that should be the bare minimum requirement of a leader. Not something exceptional. Also, I believe Rudy was a fairly unpopular guy in New York in the years leading to 911 because he made a hard choice to clean up that city. I remember instances of the cops being fairly tough on the citizens. i think you mean "police brutality". My point is that he's a good administrator and not scared to make tough decisions. That's a great quality in a leader. Perhaps, but I just think his bid is DOA due to his not particularly social conservative beliefs. That's all. Quote
crazymf Posted November 16, 2006 Author Report Posted November 16, 2006 Well, what are the choices for the Repubs next time around? Jeb Bush- not likely as he's a Bush and the public needs to settle a bit. I don't even know if he's got the Prez's job in mind. John McCain- ex POW. Lost to GWB in the last leadership race. He might be too close to the current admin to be really liked. Condi Rice- not. She's never ran a campaign. She'd be a good show down against the Clinton woman though. Who else? Black Dog Posted November 16, 2006 Report Posted November 16, 2006 This thread kicked a few names around, such as George "Maccaca" Allen. persoanlly, I think McCain will ride his (IMV unwarranted) "maverick" image to the nomination. Maybe Guliani will get the nod for veep? Quote
