Conservatives' credibility on the environment goes up in smoke

Vancouver Sun

Published: Saturday, October 21, 2006

If delivered in the form promised, the Conservative government's clean air plan would have been an ambitious and worthy undertaking.

But in the form delivered to Parliament last week, the Clean Air Act remains long on rhetoric and stripped of any sense of ambition.

In fact, there is so little urgency in the response to Prime Minister Stephen Harper's new priority of combatting local air pollution, or to controlling greenhouse gases, that a generation of children will grow up without the benefit of any appreciable change. The serious reductions in greenhouse gases would come only after many members of Parliament who will be voting on the bill are already dead.

Not a good week for Steve and his crew. I wish I was able to say their "Clean Air Act" was excellent. I would give the kudos to anyone coming up with a real plan to fight global warming. Unfortunately it is not and what's worse it attempts to water down the importance of global warming by focussing mainly on other forms of pollution.

If you wanted to discuss the shortcomings of the clean air act, this post could've went into any number of the threads about it.

This isn't about the clean air act so much as it is about "Conservatives Credibility on the Environment" going "up in smoke".

That is the title of the article.

Now, go post yet another Global Warming topic cyber!

For someone like your self whos credibility is zero I wouldn't even be mentioning the word.

Coming from the person who thinks Global Warming is hoax perpetrated by anti-capitalist de-population advocates, that doesn't bother me in the least.

Man made global warming is a fraud.

I have one. Wait until the cycle turns. It always does.

The global warming people remind me of individuals that would throw away their light bulbs around June 15, saying "it's been getting brigher for at least five months. Soon we won't need them".

Coming from the person that supports 'stronger' measures... the same measures that had emissions skyrocket over the last 13 years. The Liberals failed us, the NDP is irrelevant. We have to like the CPC plan, it's the best we've seen yet.

The next Leaders Debate:2007

The next question is to Mr. Harper. Mr. Harper, many have criticised your plan for the environment, saying it doesn't do enough to combat global warming. How do you respond?

Harper:

Look, the Kyoto Accord called for a reduction in greenhouse gases of 6% over eighteen years. Eighteen years for just 6%. That's because these kinds of things have long timelines. They involve new polices, tax incentives and grants, industry planning, and new construction. My plan calls for a 65% reduction over fifty years. It's actually considerably more ambitous than Kyoto was. But we have to plan and consult first. You don't just tear down a power plant. You need to build a new one first. Which means you have to plan for one, which means you need to get financing in place. To do that governments at all levels have to have set policies and programs in place, and THAT means knowing what we want to achieve and how best to spend our money to achieve that.

The Liberals didn't do any of that. Their environmental policy was all smoke and mirrors. They grandly signed onto Kyoto without any consultation or planning, and as a result, thirteen years along, instead of being well on our way to achieving our goal of a 6% reduction, Canada has actually increased it's emissions by thirty percent.

Now some people have suggested the Conservatives should come out with the same kind of unrealistic, glossy, feel-good announcement. They tell me the media is short sighted and will trumpet this grand announcement, and then move on to whatever Britney or Madonna are doing, so that we don't actually have to do anything. Hey, it worked for the Liberals. But that's not the reason I sought this job. That's not the kind of way I want our party to run this country, and I won't do it.

Please do not make up sh@t about me k? thx.

And if you think a target 50 years down the road is a plan you need to look again.

I guess you won't be supporting Iggy,Rae,or Dion. Look at their environmental agenda.

They all are on a 2050 plan.Same strokes,different folks.

That's the date the government committee set as achieveable.

Who ya gonna call....global warming busters?

Well, you would have more credibility on that if your description was complete, but it's not.

Rae, for one, proposes we meet the Kyoto targets of 2012 AND he sets 2020 and 2050 targets.

Tell you what, I'll post his plan just for you.

Looks like the only thing that went up were the poll numbers.

No doubt about it, the CPC deserves a majority.

I think not. They deserve what they will get, another minority at best is my guess. I think that the longer they hold power the greater their chance at losing even that. The next Liberal leader will win the next election if Harper doesn't do two things. The first is giving his Ministers the opportunity to govern within their own juridictions. The second is making them accountable for their actions. He promised change, he must live up to that or suffer the consequences. In fact he made promises he simply is unable to keep. But people don't see this yet, he hasn't been in power long enough for them to realize it through his actions. If they are perceptive it will become very clear to them by the end of the spring session of Parliment.
