Martin, depending on where he speaks and to whom loves everything. He will cut taxes, increase spending on new programs, spend more on the military, spend more on health care, cut debt, pay off the debt interest and make sure the Cities have more money !! [www.paulmartin.ca]

That a boy Paul ! Now lets look at the math.

Martin wants Federal debt to be 25 % of GDP in 5 years from today's 40 % level. If he would do this I would vote for him. But he won't - why not ?

-This requires $63 Billion in pain [TD bank forecast]

-This is $12 Billion per year in either spending reduction or Tax increases

From where ? Martin wants to INCREASE gov't size not reduce it. His various programs add up to about $100 billion over 5 years in MORE spending not less. [Post, Sept 25 F15]

He has further not committed to specific program cuts of any size.

Why then state that his prime objective is debt/GDP ratio of 25 % if he has no intention of doing it ?

1. He hopes the economy in Ont and Alta will still grow providing more revenue for Ottawa and that growth will outrun the spending increases.

2. He will not give us tax cuts of any size.

3. He wants business to vote Lie-beral.

Given his track record I don't trust Martin. He is a big spender not a tax cutter.

I predict that Gov't under Martin will GROW not shrink.

Any takers ?

As the merger happens, we will see Martin exposed for what he is. A Liberal. As the ascension of the new Conservative party begins, and the media spotlight turns to Mike Harris, many votes that were parked in the Liberal column for lack of a real governing alternative will slide away. The left flank of the Lieberals has already been eaten into by the NDP, so you'll see Martin talking more like a leftist before too long.

Business loved Mike harris. Once the merger happens, the taps will be turned on to the conservatives again, and the Liberal reservoir will start to dry up.

he will be xposed for the empty suit he reeally is, and the house of cards will collapse.

Martin's empire was built on Gov't backed loans.

Martin during the 90s increased spending and taxes he did not reduce them.

Black Dog - you sound like a naive little person who believes what people say.

How about looking at reality, facts and what people do.

Martin has not done anything to reduce the scope of gov't in Canada.

He was foursquare behind the Liberal increase in spend and tax during the 90s. The debt/GDP ratio fell due to increased revenues from Ontario and Alta.

The cash cows are being milked and the average worker squeezed. This is the program of Lie-beralism.

Yes, and Martin was also wholly behind the traditional definition of marriage, until he suddenly changed his tune a few short years later.

Martin is not a leader, he is a follower, a sheep if you will, since he does not take clear and decisive action that he believes is right, but instead follows the latest polls and does what he believes will curry the most favour.

Like most British Columbians, I view the upcoming appointment of Canada's latest Prime Minister with detachment and a small sense of hope: Detachment as it really doesn't affect us nor do we have any input into how you Canadians run your confederation.

Our hope comes from maybe the next asshole won't be as bad as the current one, who thinks that gassing British Columbians is a topic for humor. We're not holding our breath per se, except to avoid the latest volley of Canadian tear gas, but we'll see how Martin does before we start hating him as badly as we hate the rest of your Prime Ministers.

I think that Martin is about to discover that traditional political strategies are no longer valid in the Canadian confederation. It used to be that if you stumped across the confederation, making locally favorable promises one day and then making the exact opposite promises the next week in another part of the confederation, the media would look the other way, as it was a "local message".

The problem is that modern media doesn't work like that. The people in Toronto will hear Martin promising people in Vancouver that the gravy train for Ontario and Quebec is done as he speaks the words. The people in Vancouver will also hear him echo the words of Cretin, promising another round of "fuck the British Columbians and Albertans".

Martin also peppers his speeches with so many weasel words, it's impossible to say what he's promising. Last week, he promised the UBCM that he's going to return a "portion" of the billions in gas taxes the Canadians steal from British Columbians at "some time in the future".

Do you really think that we're all yokels Paul? You've been listening to Cretin too long, we're not that stupid. At least blatantly lie like the other Canadians do: You're a Canadian Liberal, it'll come real natural to you.

the good thing about canadian politics is even though we will go from PC to a huge liberal majority, ontario will still go on pretty much the same. they dont have alot of power to fuck us up any more then normal. so it wont effect our lives as bad as it would in alot of other countries.

hopefully they wont waste our money as much as expected though, that pisses me off. then again, thats what gov does.

actually i would love to see a party emerge with a policy of focusing on goverment downsizing and efficientcy.

instead of moving money every election from health care, to eduction, and back to health care, we could save hundreds of millions by getting rid of redundant government services and firing the lazy ass civil servents who do nothing.

Riff,

I fully agree with you here. Government has a finger in every pie these days, and it simply isn't necessary. Nor is it prudent to be pissing money away on ridiculous projects (gun registry, bilingualism, the useless Telehealth Ontario) when the services government is supposed to be providing are in such sorry shape (education, healthcare, police, military).

If I was a conspiracy theorist, I'd say that the Liberals were bent on expanding government and creating new government jobs, because those government workers can be counted on to vote Liberal because they know that any other party might downsize them back to the private sector, where they actually have to work instead of messing about and taking the day off for every obscure holiday, if it rains, if they don't feel like working etc.

Buying votes with taxpayer money. If I was a conspiracy theorist...

Sure look at Ontario.

Eve's election promises would cost $3.5 B. McGuinty's $5 Billion. Lie-beral Howdy Doody McGuinty wants to repeal the corporate tax cuts due to take effect in 2004. This will cost an additional $2.2 Billion and retard business investment.

Neither party leader has touched on reforms to health, energy, the tax sharing system between governments, transport, immigration, the waterfront, personal income tax cuts, debt repayment, spending reductions etc.

Nothing.

Just spend spend spend.

Eves finally converted in the debate last week to tax cuts and spending reform.

Hey Ernie you are 2 years too late.

Bye Ernie.
