Remiel Posted October 5, 2006 Report Posted October 5, 2006 This may only be borderline political, but I think since it has to do with feminism (which is political), it at least qualifies to be asked here. Perhaps I am missing something, but everytime I see Woman or Women used as an adjective, I keep thinking to myself, " But that isn't even correct English, is it? " So... Am I right, or am I wrong? My usual test is to substitute Man or Men to see how it sounds... and it always comes out sounding even more wrong... So, how did people start using those worlds improperly, so bloody often? Is there something wrong with using an accepted adjective " Female " or the possessive, " Women's " ? As I side note, I don't want this to turn into some bloody rant about how feminists are destroying the world by certain members of this community... I just want to understand the use of the language in this context... Quote
M.Dancer Posted October 5, 2006 Report Posted October 5, 2006 I may lack imagination...but who is it used...give an example I can only think of "Womanly" As in her womanly hips swayed with a shakira like sensuality.... Remiel Posted October 5, 2006 Author Report Posted October 5, 2006 I can't remember specifics, but it is used in names like " The Society of Woman Professors " or " The Women Health Professional Council " . Those aren't groups that actually exist, but whenever I see it they use the same grammatical structure. Quote
M.Dancer Posted October 5, 2006 Report Posted October 5, 2006 with no possesive 's? The Women Network.....? Never heard of it..... Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us

" So... Am I right, or am I wrong? I thought Canadian and French were the languages in use up there. Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone." Will the steps anyone is proposing to fight "climate change" reduce a single temperature, by a single degree, at a single location? The mantra of "world opinion" or the views of the "international community" betrays flabby and weak reasoning (link).
