The Zionist movement for a Jewish homeland was well-underway, and many Jews had "returned" to Palestine (see ancient history) before the United Nations divided that area of Palestine which remained (after one large section was sliced away and given independance as Trans Jordan) between the Jews and the Muslims there. The Jews made up about 66% of the population in the area which was set aside for them. Obviously that number climbed as more Jews began to come to the new Israel. First: Jews made up 55 per cent of the population of the Jewish areas at the time of partition, not 66 per cent. You neglect to mention that Jews made up just 33 per cent of the population of the mandate in 1947, yet were allotted 57 per cent of the territory. link Following a visit to Palestine in 1867, Mark Twain described the Negev Desert in his book "The Innocents Abroad" as "a desolation that not even imagination can grace with the pomp of life and action…". Negev" in Hebrew means south. Israel's Negev Desert, where Abraham, Isaac and Jacob tended their flocks, comprises 66%, over 6,700 square miles, of Israel. D'ya think maybe they gave them a bit extra to make up for the fact two thirds of their alotted land was useless desert? This guy just beats up and down on the reporter. To make her voice heard, the studio lowers his volume and raises her so she speaks over him. This man rocks. Because he's loud? Because he's loud and ignorant? Because he's a loud, ignorant, dishonest, fanatic? Because he hates Israel and is one of those schitzophrenic Lefties who desperately admire Arabs while blithely overlooking their rabid racism, vicious sexism and murderous homophobia? He explains why there is so much hate in the area. I don't think you can get any kind of reasoned explanation from a man as full of hate himself as this loud, braying ass. Again with the bad numbers. The Negev desert is 66 per cent of all of Israel (in other words, the total landmass that was being partitioned). Israel also received sole access to the Red Sea and the Sea of Galilee (the largest source of fresh water in Palestine) and three fertile lowland plains in the north. Some of the areas allotted to Israel (in particular, along the coast) were areas with high Jewish populations. Other areas had no Jewish residents at all. Quote
