Then why are there HUGE, huge industries based around our liesure time? Hospitality, travel, fishing, Big Pickle ball?

Because we're f*cking nuts.
Compelled to make a business out of everything possible. Fees to go on a beach, skyrocketing fees to pitch a tent in a campsite, fishing & hunting licenses for every species, etc. etc.

Used to see 3 mainstream acts that played all night for $3 in the 1970s, now you'll pat more for the city bus to get there and pay a weeks wages to see one act play for maybe 45 minutes.

What I hated most about life in the big city was every time you stepped out the door, you returned with an empty wallet.
