The Liberal party has filed a formal complaint with the federal elections commissioner over thousands of last-minute voter registrations in the Toronto riding won by NDP MP Olivia Chow last January.
Chief Electoral Officer Jean-Pierre Kingsley has disclosed 795,000 voters registered on election day, resulting in delays and frustration at many polling stations. A further 55,000 voters registered when they turned up at advance polls.

Liberals alarmed by last minute voters

Chow won by 6300 votes.

So Liberal like, to wait forever to do something.

Why now, and not a couple of months ago?

So across Canada, 795k people signed up on election day. So what? Those are people for all the parties.

As for the 55k people registering on advanced polls, I did. I had turned 18 and was back from school, so i went to the advanced poll and registered.

Much ado about nothing, and is just a further waste of taxpayers money and detracts from real buisness that needs attention.

Who knows? Maybe they figured that whoever barks last barks loudest.

I didn't have to show ID or anything at my polling station, just walked up, filled out a ballot, and was on my way. The lady 'recognized' me so I didn't have to worry about ID, didn't know my name or if I lived in the riding of course since I had no idea who the hell she was.

Canadian's don't take anything seriously, no kidding there is elections fraud when there is no control during the polling process.

Did one guy not steal a box of ballot and drive them into a swamp in the Maritimes?

We had all those voters registered that they were living at their offices to vote for landslide annie.

Our elections are a joke. I figure Afghanistan was probably more secure.

I had the same impression when I saw the headline but if you read the article, it is clearer that the Liberals seem genuinely interested in trying to fix the election process.

Nobody recognized me but I showed an envelope with my address.

I like the idea of using purple ink as they do elsewhere in the world. One, it would make headlines around the world that Canadians also use purple ink - a purple finger in the air would become a symbol of democracy (which it is already). Two, it would get rid of any doubts about the voting system in Canada. The only quibble would be about citizenship and riding. Three, it would be visible to everyone for several days afterwards who voted and who didn't.

I'm all for the purple ink, great idea. I don't know how that'd work with advance polls though, have to get the extra long lasting ink or just cut off their thumb and keep it in ice for re-attachment after the general election.
