They didn't self-deport, they just left.  They said they were in the country legally as they had gone to a border crossing and applied for asylum, which was still in process.  I'm not sure why this is newsworthy.

Well Reuters put the story out, so you may want to ask them why they did it. 

And they weren't in the country legally, because they didn't have any legal documents. They did the right thing by leaving the country. Good for them.
