SALT: The deciding factor?

In civilised Canada, we cannot claim provincial taxes on our federal taxes.

A tax is a tax. A province is a province. A state is a state.

Before Trump, I was astonished to learn that Americans can claim their local state taxes on their federal taxes.

IOW, you Americans can use your state taxes to reduce your federal taxes.

In Canada, this is not possible.

In Montreal, I pay about $4500 local annual property tax.

In Canada, I cannot claim/reduce my federal tax with this local tax.

Canada is a civilsed federal state.

I want to be clear about this - Americans can correct me.

In America, a person can declare/reduce federal taxes with state/local taxes paid.

If you pay state/local tax, you do not pay federal tax on the amount (SALT).  

This means that state/local government bureaucrats can spend money from other states. Amazing.
