scribblet Posted April 6, 2006 Report Posted April 6, 2006 I thought Harper handled QP very well, with a good strategy of letting the CPC remaining seated for the first 11 questions from the opposition while they took in and absorbed opposition attack strategy. Harper noted in response to an attack from Opposition leader Bill Graham that his gov' has has allready released three-quarters-of-a-billion dollars to farmers in its first act, which is more than the previous government did in 13 years. I thought Harper's comeback to the NDP question about the floor crossing was pretty good - "the only parties that really have this (floor crossing) as an obsession are the parties that no one ever crosses to." I also liked the response to Le Blanc's demand that Minister Emerson excuse himself from softwood lumber discussions to avoid conflicts of interest. Good reply from Emerson who says that the Liberals were happy to have his involvement on softwood lumber when he was a Liberal MP but now have changed their minds... Also thought it was noteworthy that Harper pledged to uphold the Canada Health Act So far, looking good for the CPC. Quote Hey Ho - Ontario Liberals Have to Go - Fight Wynne - save our province
August1991 Posted April 6, 2006 Report Posted April 6, 2006 I didn't watch any of it on TV but from reports, it seems it was one of the better entries of a new government. Harper seems to be at ease on the other side of the aisle. I thought the following remark was dumb: Harper got off the best one-liner of the day when he made a self-mocking joke about his cold persona after being accused of seducing Emerson. "I don't think I've ever been accused of seducing anyone, even my wife," he said, glancing up into the gallery opposite at Laureen and the Harper children, Ben and Rachel. "I see there's some agreement in the gallery," the prime minister added when the roars of laughter had died down. CPHarper has a quick tongue (no problem there) but he should avoid some topics of humour in public. It may have played well in the gallery but as John Ehrlichman used to say, it doesn't play in Peoria. Quote

Great politician comeback, avoid the question and take a jab at the person it. It was a truthful response though to the question though. Why address it further when there is no substance in the attack other than for partisan purposes? There is no unethical behavior in acting in your constitutants best interests, in fact, thats what I thought the job was supposed to be about. MP's have a lot to learn from Emerson. The NDP are just complaining because its an easy pickup for them if it goes to recall. Quote RealRisk.ca - (Latest Post: Prosecutors have no "Skin in the Game") --
cybercoma Posted April 6, 2006 Report Posted April 6, 2006 Belinda Stronach crosses and apparently it's in the best interest of her constituents. Of course, anything that benefits the Stronachs' is in the best interest of the people living in her riding. Emerson crosses the floor and people cry. Floor crossers should sit as independants, end of story. Quote

Then again, floor crossers should be able to sit in cabinet as well (best interests of their constituants), just for logistical purposes its easier to have them in said party.
