Jim Coutts was a chief of staff (like Leslie Church) and Trudeau Snt let him run in a by-election.

He lost.

Dalton Camp was a chief of staff (to Stanfield). Robert Caplan famously defeated him in a general election.

Bob Haldeman and Ron Klain were chiefs of staff.

Draw your own conclusions.

Let me add that - IMHO - this weird/awful position is peculiar to modern government. It didn't exist prior to the 1950s and it doesn't exist in the private sector.

CEOs like Warren Buffet or Elon Musk have many assistants, even principal assistants. But I don't think either has a chief of staff - and nor did Hoover or King.

Trudeau's principal secretary was Marc Lalonde who went on to become an MP.

Are oyu insinuating that elections were run and handled and fully campaigned by the person running?

If you think so, you are completely misinformed. There were always teams and election trail hierarchy.

I'm suggesting that 1) by-elections are often protest votes and 2) chiefs of staff are often failed politicians.

1. So, of the 8 federal by elections and only 1 lost are protest votes?

2. Please name the failed politicians that are chiefs of staff.
