Riverwind Posted February 26, 2006 Report Posted February 26, 2006 "The 2006 Winter Games aren't the box office smash they were supposed to be. Through Wednesday, 890,000 tickets were sold. TOROC officials originally forecast 1.5 million spectators, then downgraded the goal to 1 million a year ago and had only sold 500,000 by last fall. TOROC hopes 10 Euro tickets to Sunday's cross-country finale will offer a big boost to the bottom line"I think the olympics are a spent force. Beijing and Vancouver will see media ratings continue to decline as more and more people tune out because they no longer see the point of nationalist flag waving over sports that nobody plays. Canada's medal count at this olympics was entirely the result of the gov't support of atheletes. In other words, gov'ts can buy as many medals as they want by just spending enough money. Hardly something to beat your chest with pride about. Quote To fly a plane, you need both a left wing and a right wing.

Riverwind Posted February 26, 2006 Report Posted February 26, 2006 Canada is the one of the countries that do not pay their Olympic atheletesAnd traditionally Canada does poorly compared to countries that do. Since Vancouver got the 2010 Olympics, Canada has dramatically increased its spending on athletes and we saw the results in the last two weeks. In others words, if you want medals just spend money. Its just an observation but a lot of "old" folks participated in the Winter games. In the summer games you peak in the twenties and thats it dude, you simply have no steam for competition thereafter and have to retire from the games Quote

margrace Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 Thank god they are over! YES! Back to normal life. Congratulations to all the athletes...now get back to work. Yes back to boring old re runs on the TV. Its been a wonderful 17 days. Do people really like American Idol. I was visiting the other night and was forced to watch it. What a bunch of trip, do people have nothing better to do, and it went on and on and on. Lord help me. Quote

shoop Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 How old is old? Where is this coming from? Other than curling, in which age isn't really that big a deal, I can only think of one other Canadian athlete who might be considered *old*. Pierre Leuders is 35, but 35 isn't *that* old... I think there is something very Canadian in falling exactly one medal short of our target ... Could it be there is a vast difference in age groups between the two Olympics. Emil Zatopek (whom I have personally met and changed a light bulb in his office, TWICE) at the age of 30 plus won three gold medals, in 5k, 10k and a marathon, in the Helsinki Olympics. (Both of these times, after I changed his light bulb, he pulled out a bottle of strong liquor and we clinked our glasses to cheer to our health ... "NA ZDRAVI!") When I saw that target of 25 medals I thought that Canadians were overly optimistic. As it turned out (11 fourth & 7 fifth place finishes) we were overly pessimistic. Geoffrey had a perfect read on it, and he deserves a gold medal too, IMO! Spike22 Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 I think there are so many other things on the television these days people are tuning in for a few minutes then channel surfing. I get countless channels on digital cable and my wife likes to hang 10 with the remote control, surfing day and night, night and day. In fact she is driving me crazy with all those darn renovation shows *&^%#ing lovely. Quote

Geoffrey had a perfect read on it, and he deserves a gold medal too, IMO! So true. Emil Zatopek is a great example. I don't see how age matters. Out XC skiing this weekend, I was getting passed by these crazy seniors, how embarassing! But really, if someone is older, yet still athletically capable, I don't see how that makes the games less intense due to their age. Seriously, some of these seniors could give any of us youngins a run for our money. I'll take a gold by the way. Quote RealRisk.ca - (Latest Post: Prosecutors have no "Skin in the Game") --
Wilber Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 Duff Gibson. 39 and gold in the scariest sport in the Winter Olympics. Beauty! Salt Lake had the highest TV ratings of any recent winter games and that was only 4 years ago. Not surprised TV ratings were down considering the time change. Really not surprised they were down in the US. NBC hardly televised anything live including the closing ceremony. I kept switching from CBC live coverage to NBC trying to get an American take on certain things and the Olympics never seemed to be on. No wonder Americans didn't tune in to many events if they already knew the result before hand and when you consider how so many of their athletes didn't meet expectations. I think Vancouver will be a different animal when it comes to North American viewers. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
