Clearly some folks got away with it and some did not.

 

CRA reversed $246M in pandemic benefit debts after thousands contested eligibility status

The government has had to cancel at least $246 million in debts for thousands of Canadians it initially claimed had received pandemic benefits for which they weren't eligible.

Like I mentioned the EI ppl told the wife to claim the Covid as medical EI was bound up during Covid. She died a couple months after finally getting the EI claim through and a year later they made her estate pay back the $2000 Covid benefit.

I she'd only lived another couple years and refused to pay, they would've given up. Not that she was the type to begrudge other's 'luck'.
