This was a speech from the CPC website. Please read carefully and then consider the senate appointment of Fortier Stephen Harper made today.

There are three critical reforms. First, we need to get on with modernizing our upper house. We should get on with the job of electing senators. Secondly, we want fair, fixed election dates, not dates chosen simply for the partisan political interests of the Prime Minister. And finally we want to clean up internal party politics, beginning with grassroots democratic control of the nomination process. All three of these initiatives will strengthen democracy of Canada and require a Prime Minister willing to bring in legislation and enact reform.

"Mr. Harper ran a campaign which emphasized accountability and ethical behaviour by Canadians and by parliamentarians," said Liberal Opposition Leader Bill Graham.

"I have to say, therefore, that I am concerned, given Mr. Harper's past statements, that he's decided to put into his cabinet a non-elected minister of public works," Graham said of Fortier.

Graham also blasted Harper's decision to appoint Emerson, particularly because of the criticism Martin faced when former Tory Belinda Stronach crossed the floor to join the Liberal government last spring.

"I was in the House of Commons when Mr. Harper vigorously criticized Mr. Martin for including Ms. Stronach in the cabinet, and now, before he has even been appointed prime minister of Canada, he has already negotiated to have someone come over to his cabinet from the other side," Graham said in French.

Graham said Stronach left the Tories over matters of policy, and that Emerson's defection is not comparable.

Maybe Graham should be PM. After all, I am sure he would extend the right to vote to 15 year olds...it would widen his Toronto base...

Stronach claimed her situation was different than Emerson's.

"I was opposed to a budget being defeated, concerned about the party leadership and trying to defend national unity. Frank and Frontpage are two different animals yet neither are really credible. Frank will print stuff based on anonymous faxes they receive without any confirmation. Whereas Frontpage has a bit of an agenda...

Cry me a river newbie. Good on you to quote the opinion of the Opposition Leader of the most corrupt party in Canada. Emerson was the fist of the Blue Grits to defect; there will be more. Emerson is an excellent choice for a cabinet seat. It's not exactly like the CPC has groomed anyone capable of Emerson's experience. He manged a forestry company for years. The end of the softwood lumber dispute would be a political coup for PMSH. There is no doubt that Bush will be open to a leader whose ministers do not viciously - and childishly - insult him.
