The Strategic Counsel conducted the polling between Jan. 11, 12 and 14 for CTV and The Globe and Mail. Here are the national support numbers (percentage point change from Dec. 31 to Jan. 3-4, the last time the Grits and Tories were tied 32-32, is in brackets):

Conservatives: 40 per cent (+8)

Liberals: 27 per cent (-5)

NDP: 16 per cent (-1)

Bloc Quebecois: 11 per cent (-2)

Greens: 6 per cent (unchanged)

In Canada outside Quebec, the Tories hold a 45-31 lead over the Liberals.

....

Inside Montreal, the Liberals lead the Tories 23-19, which makes for a statistical tie. The Bloc has 46 per cent support.

Outside Montreal, the Conservatives have emerged as the clear federalist alternative. The Bloc has 41 per cent support, while the Tories sit at 32 per cent and the Liberals at only 12 per cent.

CTV

1) I'm surprised about how weak the NDP is.

2) The BQ is certainly not going to get its 50% and this is going to cause a large debate in sovereigntist circles. (At the same time, it may add pressure on Harper if he forms a government.)

3) Quebec is now hard to call. (Harper should thank Mulroney for this result. Mulroney made the Tories palatable in Quebec; something they hadn't been for a century.)

4) Before I wondered whether the Tories would go above 30% in at least 2 polls. Now I wonder whether the Liberals will go below 25% in at least 2 polls.

1) I'm not that surprised considering Layton hasn't been seen, and I haven't heard much policy from them.

2) It might get 50% yet, we'll see. The CPC is really actually taking votes from both the Bloc and the Liberals.

3) 6 seats is the current Geoff Prediction, the Bloc will still win an overwelming majority of Quebec seats regardless of any effort the Tories put forth.

4) I think the Liberals will continue to fall in the polls, and on election night, you'll see a below 25 liberal outcome. Maybe a 45 conservative outcome if they can hit off a strong final week.

The thing that scares me the most about Martin is his committment to turn over decision making power in this country to an unelected and unaccountable Supreme Court, which for the most part he and Chretien appointed to serve. That alone hardly gives me any warm and fuzzy feelings, that this bunch of LIberal Party hacks will decide for all Canadian's what is acceptable and what is not acceptable morally and sociatal. Their decision so far certainly does not represent grassrooots Canadians.

This is exactly what will happen with the removal of the nothwithstanding clause from the Charter. The last thing I want to have happen to Canada is for this bunch of moron's to have control of our country, by being basically to charge our society with absolutely no input from the people of Canada.

Their latest ruling regarding the legalization of orgy clubs was that last straw for me, and Martin seems to think that is okay as long as these clubs are not serving liquor, they can welcome into those clubs a 14 year old for a wild old party for perverts. To me that is what he is saying by not coming out against this latest ruling from appointees from the PM's Office.

I was not happy with the Court's ruling regarding Same Sex Marriage, but I am even more upset by their latest ruling regarding the legalization of orgy clubs. Any ruling from this body needs to reflect the morals and values of the people, not the obvious lack of morals and values possessed by the Supreme Court appointees. Therefore I have no choice but to choose the only Party who talks about moral and values, teh Conservatives.

I don't think anyone would be ok with a 14 year old at a swingers club... I hope your not making this up, did Martin actually say that?

He making it up. It is a reference to the law that makes 14 the age of consent.

To fly a plane, you need both a left wing and a right wing.

Thought as much... though I guess it would be legal hey?

Definately need to either use that good old section 33 or at least regulate this.

The Conservatives are the best alternative for Quebec. They're the only party that believes in giving more independance and power to the provinces over their own matters.

Thank you! That is one point that I've always liked about the CPC when I was first looking into what party to join. It's time to stop with the overburdening parent and let the kids make some of their own decisions.

Economic Left/Right: 3.25

Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -2.26

I want to earn money and keep the majority of it.
