myata Posted February 5, 2022 Report Posted February 5, 2022 An amazing event today no doubt. Lots of smiles lot of sun everywhere, music, singing, fun posters, children, more smiles young and old all genders and ethnicities inflated slides with laughing children really a carnival of freedom. If someone been there and has a different take I would discuss readily. But don't feed me angry misogynists and Nazis bull, no I don't need it with a few miles but please feel free to consume it yourself (all of it). There's still freedom in Canada, no doubt. But it's not assured and definitely not guaranteed, however and wherever enshrined. Without effective checks on governments democracy will not survive. Here we see it very clearly. Political games and spectacles are not checks, only imitations, facades. But we need a real and working democracy, working for the citizens not mostly itself, behind the facade. This time is lining up as that of reckoning. America has to face its divisions. And Canada, inherent elitism, the system of entitlement and emerging on its base authoritarianism. There is no such thing as guaranteed and assured freedom, forever. Quote If it's you or them, the truth is equidistant
myata Posted February 6, 2022 Author Report Posted February 6, 2022 There exist several models of democratic accountability and responsible government. Probably no one is perfect, but still they all have real mechanisms of keeping governments in check and making them work for the citizens, not only or mostly for themselves. - Proportional representation: a coalition is formed to make progress on specific goals and areas. - Separation of executive and legislative powers, checks and balances - Direct democracy But how likely would it be that a model created in the 18th century will be effective in all times and situations, without even minimal evolution? The democracy in the country is in a dire need of rethought and renewal. Quote If it's you or them, the truth is equidistant
