August1991
Over the years, I've worked with many translators and even some very good interpreters. I've even done both jobs, badly. To clarify, translators rewrite another person's text into another language. Interpreters say the words of another person into another language (simultaneous translation). The first time that I worked with a professional interpreter I was terrified: she knew what I was going to say before I said it. (Because of youtube, I like listening to international C-Span records with both audios to admire the work of interpreters.) IME, most good translators and interpreters are obsessed with precision. And IME, most translators and interpreters are women. (There may be exceptions at the rarefied Head of State level - where male interpreters dominate - but I suspect this is due to trust rather than competence. In the State Dacha, who interprets for Merkel when she meets Putin off the agenda?) ===== Over the years, I've worked with many coders. I've even wrote code (usually spaghetti-style). I was amazed the first time that I saw code written by a professional. It was commented, indented, variables named. Like translators/interpreters, coders take an idea and translate it into something else. IME, most good coders are obsessed with precision. And IME, most coders are men.
