Once again Mayor Ray Nagin has failed the people of New Orleans. Ignoring the advice of the feds, he gave the ok for thousands of people to return to the city. Now, circumstances have dictated that he reverse his discision and order New Orleans to be evacuated. Is it any wonder why there was such confusion and error related to the original Katrina planning and relief efforts? The local government has once again failed the people of New Orleans, it's time for them to go!

The call for another evacuation came after repeated warnings from top federal officials, including President Bush, that New Orleans was not safe enough to reopen

Jill Sandars, a 55-year-old contract paralegal and Web site designer who lives in the French Quarter, did not evacuate before or after Katrina but said she may leave this time if New Orleans appears threatened. She said she is tired of the conflicting information from city officials about whether people should come or go

Although Nagin backed off his plan to begin readmitting residents to parts of the city, a rift between local and federal officials remained.

On Tuesday, Nagin had harsh words for the federal government's top official in the city, Coast Guard Vice Adm. Thad Allen, who he said "stepped outside his lane by talking directly to the citizens of New Orleans."

It's long past time. How did this guy ever get to be mayor. New orleans has a long history of corruption and of being the most corrupt city in the US. I can't believe the american taxpayer is being put on the hook to rebuild it. I think it should be up to the state.

Disaster recovery is one of _the_ primary benefits of belonging to large nation-states like the US. It is rediculous to suggest that any level of government other than the feds should provide the funds to rebuild.

As an American i have no problem seeing my tax dollars going to rebuild a major hub of American economy.

Officials at all levels butt heads over hurricane relief operations

The discord began Aug. 27, when Mr. Bush asked Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco to order an evacuation of New Orleans. Mrs. Blanco did not issue the order until Aug. 28, a day before Hurricane Katrina made landfall.

   

Mrs. Blanco also neglected to ask the president for federal troops when she wrote him a letter on Aug. 27 and when she spoke with him on Aug. 29. She had not made the request even on Aug. 31, when she gave a series of television interviews in Baton Rouge.

  

"I really need to call for the military," she told her press secretary between interviews. "And I should have started that in the first call."

Later that day, she asked the White House for troops, which were dispatched to assist Louisiana National Guard forces.

Mrs. Blanco hesitated again when she met Sept. 2 with Mr. Bush, who offered to have the federal government take over the chaotic evacuation. Mrs. Blanco said she needed 24 hours to make a decision and ultimately rejected the federal offer
