When you boil it all down there really is no difference between the Tories and the Grits They both want to sell Canada out to the highest bidder, they support trade agreements with the US that are to Canada's detriment, and they basically represent the rich, you know the people who want a flat-tax system, and no public services such as decent public schools, or health care for the poor. Every single complaint Canadians have against their national government can be laid at the footstep of these two parties, because they have been running Canada since confederation. So if you are upset with your national government blame the Tories and the Grits.

Layton: Nation feeling disenfranchised

A deepening malaise is settling on the nation, and Canadians want their government to do something about it by addressing issues that affect them, federal New Democrat Leader Jack Layton said Tuesday.

Layton said his party plans to push pet policies - fighting privatization of health care, curbing pollution and making higher education more affordable - when the House of Commons resumes Sept. 26.

"People feel the country is not only adrift but in difficulty because of a lack of leadership (but) they don't see action," Layton said.

"They particularly are worried about how their country is slipping away between their fingers."

Canadians have a right to expect some "serious action" on issues such as the softwood lumber dispute with the United States, but the Liberal government has been "invisible," Layton said.

As an example, he said Prime Minister Paul Martin has been conspicuously quiet about the ongoing lockout at the CBC.

"It's as though he doesn't care about something as important as a national broadcasting system."

As a two-day NDP caucus retreat wrapped up, Layton took pains to avoid threatening to bring down the fragile minority government he helped prop up last spring in exchange for expensive changes to the Liberal budget.

"I don't do threats," he said. "That's not the way to do politics. That's what you do in the schoolyard, and what we're talking about is getting something done."

"If that doesn't happen, then the House will fall apart and there'll be an election."

How the other three parties react to the NDP's proposals, which he declined to discuss, will help determine whether the government survives into the new year, he said.

Layton said "a lot of political games" are starting up again, as happened in the spring when the minority government teetered on the edge.

As examples, he cited Martin's stated desire for a majority government, and comments from other party leaders about forming alliances to defeat the Liberals.

"It just says to the Canadian people that these parties didn't learn anything from the chaos of the spring," Layton said.

As Ed Broadbent once said, Mastercard and Visa.

But poor old Ed didn't know that every Canadian has both in their wallet. And now Jack is arguing that it makes no sense to pay off the credit card bill when the kids need an education.

Or as Tommy Douglas once said, black cats and white cats.

But CBC-canonized Tommy didn't know that many Canadians have cats at home because they're nice pets - or had barn cats because mice are a scourge.

There is a difference between Liberals and Conservatives, moreso in this modern world. But Canada's NDP is becoming more and more a historical relic. When other Left-wing, Social Democratic parties around the world are changing, the NDP is stuck in a 1960s time-warp - a strange post-millenia combination of hippy pro-marijuana, anti-pig, pro-progressives.

Harper and Martin are identical, two peas in a pod as they say. There is no better way to confirm than looking at Elections Canada webside. The bulk of their money comes from a few select corporation, the rich who they mingle with on a daily basis, both of them. Canadians want better health care, better schools, less pollution, good public transit. Canadians don't want to be involved in illegal wars with the US, both Harper and Martin do. the Tories brought us the softwood lumber disagreement with the US and the Grits have continued it. These two political parties fundamentally are quite identical representing the same people. I am surprised thay the Tories and the Grits have not considered merging before now. Perhaps they will after the next election.

You keep saying that but the so-called neo-liberal agenda began when August? How many hundreds of years ago? Talk about a time warp. The right also seems hell bent on bringing back religion into schools with ID and opposing the expansion of civil rights (SSM). You think that is modern? I wonder how you define modern. You also completely ignore the fact that the left has seized upon the late modernity agenda with a focus on total cost accounting and the environment. You also ignore the fact that the Conservatives are not in power.

Anyways, I gotta go, I have a big fatty waiting for me. Nah, I'll just use the bong.

Didn't you mean that big business has them both in their pockets (Liberals and Conservatives that is)

In methods, yes they are, but their ends are the same. The Liberals come across as "we wanna be socialistic" but "look over there", and while you're looking, they pick your pocket. The Cons (good short form for them, isn't it) say... "We just can't afford stuff you lefty citizens want... we have to take what you have and give it to Big Business, or they might go away... It'll be good for you in the long run"
But Canada's NDP is becoming more and more a historical relic.
Can you believe it... they think that the government is there for the benefit of the citizens of Canada... They're "stuck in a 1960's time-warp"

And you admit that you think "progressive" is wrong ???
