mirror Posted August 21, 2005 Report Posted August 21, 2005 Canada flexes its muscles in dispute over Arctic wastes I suppose this is something we have to do to ensure our sovereignty in the Arctic. I presume if we intend to be serious about this, we are going to have to provide our armed forces with the necessary equipment to do the job. Is this a coincidence of timing or do I hear an election coming on? Quote

Toro Posted August 21, 2005 Report Posted August 21, 2005 This is the best part of the article. The military, meanwhile, is not ideally equipped for the brutal conditions of the far north. Although it is expanding its Arctic command base at Yellowknife, the navy lacks sufficient capacity to plough through the pack ice.Critics say that this explains why the Canadian authorities have chosen the summer months to undertake their sovereignty patrols. A military exercise in the Arctic last year was termed an "embarrassing debacle" by the Toronto Star newspaper because of harsh weather and poor equipment. So I guess we better send a cable to the Danish government and ask them that if they are going to invade Hans Island, at least have the decency to do so in June or July.
