The LCBO has the most selection for the cheapest price of ANY Liquor store/network in the world. Their buying power is huge. Alberta's `Private Point-of-Sale' corner stores might be open late and on statutory holidays, but their prices are inflated and their selection sucks. One negative that is not widely known is that here in Ontario wine producers have been banging their heads against the wall for years, trying to get the LCBO to carry their products in their stores. Wineries can sell from their own doors but of course that cannot compare with having all the provincial stores carrying their products. The LCBO just seems to act like any other nitpicking government bureaucracy. The very idea of carrying something new, even if it is a product of their own province, just slows down and dies trying to get through the thick sludge of a government 'brain'. This is true. I know of one local producer who was refused a few times based on the "quality". Finally they replaced their product with a Chateau neuf and presented it for the LCBO review. The Chateau Neuf in the Ontario bottle was rejected based on quality. They told them what they did and that the LCBO rejected a french wine as inferior.....still didn't change their decision. They eventually sold their winery to Magnotta where the same product (or at least the same vineyards) is wine sold at the LCBO.
