August1991 Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 One can expect more announcements like this in the future. With a possible federal election looming, the Conservatives have trotted out what they hope will be a star candidate in Quebec, former provincial Liberal cabinet minister Lawrence Cannon. National Post Lawrence Cannon was Revenue Minister in Bourassa's government. With a few more candidates like this, the Tories might win a few seats in strongly federalist ridings in Quebec that have traditionally gone Liberal. (The BQ will get all the rest, about 60 seats. In 1984, the Liberals won 17 seats in Quebec.) Three things make it difficult: The Tories are perceived as soft on federalism. The Tories are perceived as social conservatives. Harper might as well be from the planet Mars. The importance of such Tory candidates in Quebec is to make it more palatable for some Ontarians to vote Conservative. ---- I got a joke e-mail petition today requesting that Stephen Harper take back Jean Charest since "he started out as a Conservative" and "Quebec doesn't want him anymore"! August1991 Posted April 20, 2005 Author Report Posted April 20, 2005 I was mistaken; Cannon was Communications minister. La Presse Cannon was active in the federal Liberals up to six months ago. I think a signal is going out for federalists in Quebec to abandon the Liberals for what they have done. It seems to me that this scandal is more carefully reported in French than in English. I didn't know that it would be possible for it to get any worse for the Liberals but I think it has. I can't say separatists view this with glee but rather bouche-bée. Federalists are in a quandary. Quote
