Liberals spend money on gun registry!

Recommended Posts

To some people it is worth it. To some victims of crime it brings peace of mind.

Nonsense again by a liberal supporter, the gun fiasco would regulate legal guns, the guns that kill people are mostly the ones that would never be registered. Please be realilstic.

How do you think the cops tell a legal gun from an illegal gun? Are illegal guns painted a different same color for id purposes?

It did not cost 2 billion dollars just to register guns in this country THAT is a barefaced lie! The gun registry is only one part of the gun control program and the whole program has not cost over one billion (according to the Auditor General) and that is a TOTAL for 10 years!

They just cannot stop lying about things then in the next breath they are talking honesty and integrity! It really is unbelieveable!

Why don't you ask a police officer how he or she tells the difference? People who are going to register their guns legally will not have shooting an officer foremost on their minds. However,a person of criminal intent that will not register a gun, would use their gun in a split second on an officer.Hence, any police officials I have heard talk on the subject, said the money would have been better spent such things as hiring more officers.

Who are they, and what are they lying about?

I could be wrong, but I believe that there was another motivating factor for implementing a gun registry, and it is in all probability the same reasoning that was used in Australia, which was eventual confiscation without compensation.

The last statistics I read showed that crimes such as robberies and breaks have skyrocketed since confiscation took place in Australia, and the belief is that there is much less fear by criminals of being shot by their victims. As for the police, it was also a rationale for politicians to lower the amount of police officers on the streets, and prison guards in prisons. After all with no guns and less crime, there is less need to pay police officers.

The Financial Figures Have Been Grossly Misrepresented By The Gun Lobby

Critics who refer to the “Billion Dollar Gun Registry” are misleading the Canadian public. The total cost to set up a brand new program, license gun owners, and register most guns has averaged $100 million per year, totalling $1 billion over 10 years. Most of the money has been spent on licensing gun owners not registering guns.

· Firearm robberies have declined dramatically over the decade by 64% since 1992 and 10% in the past year alone according to the latest Statistics Canada Report (M. Wallace, "Crime Statistics in Canada, 2002", Statistics Canada, Catalogue 85002 XIE, Vol.22, No. 5, July 2003)

· The program is also assisting police in tracing illegal firearms and handguns, including those smuggled into Canada from the United States.

· Domestic homicides with firearms have fallen according to the latest report on intimate partner homicide (V. P. Bunge, “National Trends in Canadian Intimate Partner Homicide, 1974-2000”, Juristat, Vol. 22, No. 5, Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics, Statistics Canada, 2002 p.5)

Many opponents of the registration system including Stephen Harper claim to support licensing. The old system cost about $30 million dollars from local police budgets. That was $30 million dollars a year for a system that 6 separate inquests concluded was deeply flawed. Under the old legislation only 1/3 of gun owners had valid Firearms Acquisition Certificates (FAC). Now all gun owners have licenses to possess guns. Under the old legislation only handguns and military weapons were registered (about 1 million) now all guns must be registered (over 6 million), The new system offers police, for the first time, real time, on line information about who owns guns and the guns they own. This is critical for taking preventative action. Without information about who owns what guns it is impossible to keep guns out of the wrong hands or to combat the illegal movement of firearms. :o

I don't know if you're just dishonest or just stupid. The fact is that you ALWAYS had to get a licence before purchasing a firearm. I got one myself back in 1990. I had to go to my local police station, fill out the proper forms, provide fingerprints and undergo the required background checks. This was a stable system which had been in place long before the government implimented its new gun control program for registering long guns.

The escalating costs of the new gun control program Ie, the new portion which specifically dealt with licencing of long gun owners, are not related to the existing licencing process. Why would they be? This program was grossly mismanaged all along the way, and costs were repeatedly misstated. That is why the Auditor General actually stopped its audit before completion, reporting to parliament that the financial records were in such a sorry mess that they could not adequately tell how much had been spent and what it had been spent on. They stated what the minimum costs were based on the financial information they COULD get hold of - $1 billion. A couple of years later Radio Canada got hold of further documentation which had not been provided to the AG's office and estimated the true costs to be closer to $2 billion.

And the original estimate? $2 million.

This for a program which essentially is useless. The problem with guns in this country is a problem with hand guns, and to a lesser extent, automatic and assault weapons. Those are the weapons Canadians want to see gotten off the street, and this program has absolutely nothing to do with them.
