Responsible Globalization and Rana Plaza

Recommended Posts

When Rana Plaza collapsed in Bangladesh, it made world headlines.  A substandard sweatshop factory that should not have been operating killed 1,129 people.

What happened in the wake of those events ?  The coverage was scant and this is a failing of mainstream media that is not realized: the disaster gets coverage because it's horrific, shocking, and ultimately entertaining.  The follow-up is not entertaining and therefore is not covered.

Joe Fresh and other companies took steps to help improve inspections but companies like Reitman's and LuluLemon have NOT signed on.  This interview with Kevin Thomas, director of SHARE, provides background.  ( 1 year old video )
