The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) has started to impact USAF basing decisions for legacy F-16s and supporting operations as squadrons come on line. The venerable F-16 is the only fighter platform that some of the base personnel have ever known.

HILL AIR FORCE BASE -- The beginning of the end for Hill Air Force Base's F-16 fleet has formally started. In order to supplement fighter pilot training, the Air Force says F-16s from Hill will be temporarily moved to up to two of the force's existing F-16 training locations, which include Luke AFB, Arizona; Holloman AFB, New Mexico; Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland's Kelly Field Annex, Texas; and Tucson Air National Guard Base, Arizona.

...The moves are the beginning a two-year divestment of Hill's F-16 fleet, coinciding with the arrival of the F-35.

The F-16 has been a fixture in Northern Utah since the late 1970s.

Over at Edwards AFB in California, F-35A weapons delivery quals are underway at record speed.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Navy is finishing up F-35C carrier qualifications on the USS George Washington (CVN-73).

..Media probed for human interest stories from the cadre of pilots on board, “What was it like, after all the simulator hours and practice landings at the airfield to actually land on the ship?” From pilots who had 50 traps with the F-35C to those who had just realized their first – they struggled to provide any other answer; “no drama, no surprise, performed as expected, very vanilla, pretty easy.”

The F-35 program is a huge investment for U.S. taxpayers and partner nations.

If you like the F35, you had better hope that Trump does not get elected president, considering he claims that the plane is not as good as the planes the U.S. was flying before (and he might cancel the program).

Trump will shut that down like Obama has shut GITMO .... You think the POTUS runs the nation?

Trump says a lot of things that obviously will never happen. He might approve Keystone XL too.

Jimmy Carter cancelled the B-1A....Ronald Reagan approved the B-1B instead.

It is true that the president does not have complete authority, and must often work with congress, sometimes compromising policies to come to an agreement.

But, the president does have a significant amount of influence, both by being able to get congressmen on his side (Trump may call on republican congress critters to "follow his lead"), or by threatening to veto any budget bills that contain F35 funding. Even if he can't out-right kill the F35, he can (through various budget negotiations) starve the program of funds, etc.

And even if the F35 isn't in danger of being cancelled by Trump, it should make you wonder... Trump's arguments against the F35 come from the long debunked argument that "the F35 can't dogfight". Do you really want a president who makes policy decisions based on things he heard, without actually gaining all the facts?

Ah yes, that rather bizarre logical disconnect that Trump supporters seem to have in their brains.

Trump is honest/tells it like it is, but when presented with a policy that they disagree with or doesn't make sense, its OK because "It won't happen". (Some might consider making policy proclamations that "won't happen" is a form of lying or deception.)

Jimmy Carter cancelled the B-1A....Ronald Reagan approved the B-1B instead.

Yes they did. Of course, such cancellation/restoration meant several years of delays. (Granted, the B1-B does improve on the B1-A.)

Do you really want the government to shelve the F35 project for 4 or 8 years should Trump somehow become president? What would that do to America's armed forces? Remember, the U.S. makes a lot of aircraft purchases. Having Trump in for a term would mean 4 more years of the U.S. buying 4th generation aircraft (meaning a larger fleet of legacy fighters that will be around a lot longer.)

Delays have been commonplace for the F-35 program....what's one more ? The U.S. still manages to come up with new tactical and strategic aircraft, far faster and in larger quantities than another "neighbouring" nation that orders and cancels military procurement programs too.

I actually started this F-35 thread in U.S. Politics because aircraft are actually being ordered and delivered to the U.S. military and partner nations. This is in sharp contrast to the many Canadian F-35 threads that only recycle the same military procurement fiascos and circle jerk for replacement CF-188s.

The U.S. is still buying 4th gen aircraft. Lots of other big, expensive platforms too. A president Trump would just be a new player in the game.

Donald Trump can say and do whatever the hell he wants as a candidate, and so far it has worked well for him.
