They spend a lot of time doing paperwork and in court. It doesn't take much to have a case thrown out. As far as traffic tickets go, only about 5% of our officers are in traffic and patrol officers don't give tickets unless it is something flagrant. Teams of major crimes and specialized officers can work months on a case before an arrest is made so your average number doesn't mean much. When you consider the evidence some of them have to wade through in order to nail people like pedophiles and child porn producers, you can't pay them enough as far as I am concerned.

That's the work we expect them to be doing.

We also expect them to protect freedom of speech (not harass, pepper spray, 'kettle', beat up, arrest, collectively punish peaceful protesters).

And we expect them to report to SIU any officers using excessive force on anybody, instead of standing silent, falsifying reports, or otherwise protecting 'bad apple' violent cops.

Yes, most cops do their jobs well. Unfortunately, when they don't police their own ranks, the whole force loses credibility, public confidence and respect, putting ALL officers in danger.

Some officers do it right. Some don't. And a few rotten apples DO spoil the whole barrel.

They have to deal with the system we have. They do have to follow up on their cases if they want to make an arrest that will result in a charge, or not. I think you watch too much TV. I don't know about your province but only the Crown can press charges in mine so there is no point running around arresting everyone, which makes refereeing and social working an important part of their job.

If I watched too much TV I would imagine that uniformed cops make dozens of arrests every month, most of them for murder and rape and get involved in many shootouts. Mostly they act as referees and bylaw enforcement and traffic enforcement and seem to spend an inordinate amount of time standing around at crime scenes chatting or watching the tape to make sure no one crawls under it while the detectives investigate. As well as, of course, lots of paperwork and waiting around to testify at courts and give interviews to lawyers.

Argus, I can see that you have such a low opinion of police officers and aren't willing to approach them to get any real insight into their jobs that there isn't much point in trying to explain anything to you.

I do not have a low opinion of police officers. I am a strong supporter of police. That doesn't mean I can't recognize they are being overpaid for their jobs, just like firefighters are, or that they are under-trained, or that most of their time is spent on paperwork and bureaucracy, or wasted waiting around to be called as witnesses at court, or that I can't recognize their tendency to cover up for each other when they screw up.
