Out of curiousity, why isn't selling/trading one of the chickens to my neighbor a choice?

Why can't I breed some chickens and give him some of those? Do I own a rooster? If I do that gives me more options. If I could give him a young rooster and small harem he could breed as many as he wanted so long as he did the right things with them. We'd both own "the means of production." Perhaps I could tax him half his eggs for renting a rooster and harem.

Wouldn't it be great if I actually knew something about farming?

do I have to give him all the eggs?

Indeed, Tawasakm. To me the answer depends a lot on the circumstances.

Are we the only 2 people on a deserted island, or is there a supermarket just down the street? If there's a supermarket just down the street and my neighbor has a decent income, then he can forget my chickens and go shopping if he's hungry.

If we are the only 2 people on an island, then my answer depends a lot on the specifics. If there are thousands of wild chickens running around on this island, then my neighbor can get off his lazy ass and go get his own. Or, compensate me in some way to catch some chickens for him.

If they're the only 2 chickens on the island, then first off, if they're a breeding pair then separating them to create some false sense of equality is obviously sheer idiocy.

If they're both hens, then there's no harm in separating them, I suppose. But if I'm going to do that, then I want something in return. Does my neighbor have something he could swap me in return? If my neighbor has some durable goods he'd be willing to swap me, I would consider it. If he has some service that I depend on, then I would keep the hens and exchange eggs for that service. We could develop a specialized economy on our island. Perhaps I could grow a little garden or something to augment my poultry industry; he could hunt for meat and build shelter and stuff.

When I was in junior high school we did a unit in social studies class where we imagined ourselves to be shipwrecked and set about various exercises in identifying needs and looking at different ways of meeting those needs. It probably sounds stupid to the older people here, but it was actually very constructive. It made the whole concept of an economy make sense.

Both my neighbour and I believe in increasing production because we recognise that these chickens are all we have

So I sell the eggs and offer my 2 fowls for rent for the incubation period. My neighbour gets all the raw material to get started.

This also means my neighbour takes care of the 2 fowls for 21 days. Means feeding the fowls etc. and making sure they are kept healthy, but just in case of negligence I also draw up a contract and put a lean against his house … just in case … he is only my neighbour – so we both agree

Now for me, life is glorious, see what I mean no chicks around, I actually get to concentrate.

In the meantime I also help him get set-up to sell the chicks when he is ready

In return I get a cut of the revenues

And guess what (yes I decided and bought them chicks myself at wholesale price)

See how good I was I give everything to my neighbour, and when he is fed up and ready to sell I WAS there to help him out

And you wondered how I do well

We need more information. Why he has no chickens; he could have a cow; trade milk. Unless there is a real need that he has good cause not to be able to address why should I give him the fruits of my labour. Let him buy my eggs. If he is ill and starving or such; I would give him the eggs for free. I would not give him one of my chickens.

It is amazing how many of you have missed the point. It doesn't matter if I have a rooster, or if there is a store down the street. I guess I was trying to see how greedy and self concerned mt felow Canadians are. I just wanted o know if you had 2 of something, and your neighbour had none, if you would do the decent thing and just give them one. guess my countrymen are more Americanized than I had hoped!!!!!

I think it matters.

As to whether or not anyone is being greedy we really don't have enough information to know. And you are operating from a presupposition of what is 'decent' that may need some work. I don't think you are taking into account the wide variety of options that may lead to a successful outcome for both parties.

more information is required.....

here is my question for you.....

You have a gun in your hand pointed at the head of a stranger do you:

A) pull the trigger

B) Give him the gun

C) Walk away

D) Shoot yourself

Nonsense. Your test was much more expansive, in that it contemplated the eggs too. In any event, your conclusion is reductionist. If the neighor has two cows that go unmentioned in your example, is it not reasonable to wonder why he has not shared the milk with you yet?

We saw what you were getting at... sort of an "Everything I Need To Know, I Learned In Kindergarten" exercise in fairness.

However, what some of us wanted to point out is that the real world is a lot more complicated than kindergarten.

Does the acknowlegment of labour supurceed the value of human life?

I think human life is the most valuable comodity on earth, and should not be sacrificed to satisfy peoples greed!

I bet alot of you call yourselves christians. I believe it says "thou shall not worship false gods". But people live and die in the pursuit to aquire more and more and more. Money determines if people live or die.

dude relax I said I would give my nieghbor the eggs for free, however...people want to know if there is a way to make things better for both people. If the nieghbor had absolutley nothing to give including labour. I don't think there is a person on this thread that would tell the guy to screw off.

Tell me it ain't so! You call human life a 'commodity'!!! I'm aghast!

You misspelled that. You mean: 'hippocracy', or rule-by- horses.

In any event, I don't see how the responses you received on this thread so far allow you to make such a blanket condemnation. For instance, you seem to have overlooked that a plurality favored the idea of giving away eggs.
