The_Squid Posted October 30, 2015 Report Posted October 30, 2015 http://news.nationalpost.com/news/canada/canadian-politics/alberta-wildrose-threaten-filibuster-over-ndp-proposal-to-convene-legislature-at-9-a-m Alberta’s Wildrose Opposition is gearing up for a battle over its objection to the NDP government’s proposal to convene the legislature at 9 a.m. Government house leader Brian Mason said the province wants to extend sitting hours to begin at 10 a.m. Tuesdays and 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays. The house would still convene at 1:30 p.m. Mondays. But its efforts to adjust the legislature’s hours to include morning sittings could spark the assembly’s first filibuster of the fall after the Wildrose delayed the first day of debate on the proposal. This is what is important enough to the WildRose Party that they are willing to filibuster to prevent starting work at 9am? Do they think that 1 hour earlier will make a big difference? How much public sympathy will they get from Albertans over this issue? Their argument seems to be that they want less time for the government to do its work in the legislature so they can be prevented from passing legislation. That's not a great reason to oppose this motion... It seems like a huge loser, in my opinion. This makes them look petty and lazy as well as incompetent. Quote
poochy Posted October 30, 2015 Report Posted October 30, 2015 Well, in theory im not against the change, of course it might be that the change is empty posturing by the NDP, making it meaningless and unnecessary. Quote
The_Squid Posted October 30, 2015 Author Report Posted October 30, 2015 Well, in theory im not against the change, of course it might be that the change is empty posturing by the NDP, making it meaningless and unnecessary. Then let them have it... Right now, it looks as if the Wild Rose are arguing just for the sake of arguing... or can't figure out what should be a real priority... or want to sleep in... Quote
cybercoma Posted October 31, 2015 Report Posted October 31, 2015 Well, in theory im not against the change, of course it might be that the change is empty posturing by the NDP, making it meaningless and unnecessary. Filibustering a meaningless issue doesn't look good at all. Quote
overthere Posted November 12, 2015 Report Posted November 12, 2015 In the meantime, Notley completely refuses to even look at government costs in Alberta, despite a bloated and overcompensated civil service. In an environment of private sector layoffs, cutbacks and personal sacrifice, nobody in the public sector is going to suffer in any way. Instead, she is running up the deficit and debt as hard as she can by spending and borrowing. There is no doubt she will use a fiscal situation that she will materially and deliberately worsen to implement a sales tax. The only question is 'when'? Politically, she'd better do it now since if the economic situation worsens and she adds 5% to the cost of everything on top of that in a couple years, there will be lynch mobs. The idiot and former social worker that is now Finance Minister will be her fall guy if she does it now. Quote Science too hard for you? Try religion!
overthere Posted November 12, 2015 Report Posted November 12, 2015 Oh, and the change in sitting hours is supposedly to make the Legislature more 'family friendly', so MLAs can spend more time with their families. Of course, only about 20% of MLAs are from Edmonton where the Legislature is located, so 80% of the MLAs are by necessity away from their families in any case. And of course, some of the remaining 20% do not have families, some of them are barely old enough to vote themselves. Quote Science too hard for you? Try religion!
overthere Posted November 18, 2015 Report Posted November 18, 2015 Expect a massive new tax announcement from Notley this week. After all, there are a few resource companies still functioning, and she needs to kneecap those ASAP. Corporate taxes, carbon taxes, pending sales tax, massive spending, massive borrowing, greastly increased power rates on the near horizon, a consuming hatred of business/jobs, and higher interest rates coming. Alberta will be Altario before the next election. Quote Science too hard for you? Try religion!
