ToadBrother Posted September 25, 2015 Report Posted September 25, 2015 No it isn't. Polls have shown that the majority disapprove of the minority which runs the country so it is an oligarchy. That isn't the definition of an oligarchy. Hence the non-sequitur. Quote
G Huxley Posted September 25, 2015 Report Posted September 25, 2015 Oligarchy = Rule by the Few. It's pretty obvious. Quote
ToadBrother Posted September 25, 2015 Report Posted September 25, 2015 Oligarchy = Rule by the Few. It's pretty obvious. But it isn't rule by a few, now is it? And it's odd form of oligarchy that can be replaced by an election. I'm sorry, I realize you think you have a rhetorical point, but all you have is an incredibly silly fallacy. Quote
G Huxley Posted September 26, 2015 Report Posted September 26, 2015 (edited) If it is the few, which are elected by a minority of voters which are running the country then it's an oligarchy. Who said an oligarchy can't be replaced? Edited September 26, 2015 by G Huxley Quote
ToadBrother Posted September 26, 2015 Report Posted September 26, 2015 If it is the few, which are elected by a minority of voters which are running the country then it's an oligarchy. Who said an oligarchy can't be replaced? A minority of voters whose demographic nature changes in every election. Oligarchy is rule by a small ruling class, not by 38% of voters. You clearly are invoking private definitions to try to win an argument. I suspect even you know how ludicrous it is to claim the people who voted Conservative in 2011 are an oligarchy. My brother, who makes less than $50k a year voted Tory in 2011. He was renting a house at the time, and was making truck payments. He';s a pretty odd oligarch. Quote
G Huxley Posted September 26, 2015 Report Posted September 26, 2015 Oligarchy is simply rule by the few. Democracy is rule by the citizenry. Since the few rules over the citizenry this isn't democracy, but oligarchy. Quote

You're just inventing a private definition in the hopes that I'm stupid enough to buy it. Quote
G Huxley Posted September 28, 2015 Report Posted September 28, 2015 (edited) It is literally 'rule by the few' in Greek, as opposed to Democracy 'rule by the citizenry'. As Aristotle wrote in his politics: politics (rule of the city) was a struggle between tyrants, oligarchs and the demos as to who would rule the city state. Nothing has changed in 2500 years. In Canada the oligarchs currently rule. Mind you since Harper has now silenced all his party members it's looking a lot like tyranny (rule by one). Edited September 28, 2015 by G Huxley Quote
