Michael Hardner Posted October 11, 2014 Report Posted October 11, 2014 https://openmedia.ca/blog/support-canadaland-indie-podcast-about-canadian-media This podcast provides an excellent weekly newsmagazine about Canadian media matters, and now they're asking for voluntary subscriptions. It's listened to by 10,000 people so if they can't make a go of it, then paid media is likely done for, and we will have to adjust. If you enjoy it, please support Canadaland. Michael Hardner Posted October 26, 2014 Author Report Posted October 26, 2014 Canadland received enough funding to become the first independent news podcast that is self-supporting. (As far as anybody knows anyway.) Also -- I have a strong suspicion that Canadaland is involved in the big CBC scandal that is breaking now. cybercoma Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 I know they are. One of their reporters on Twitter said he has been gathering evidence for the story for months. Quote

Michael Hardner Posted November 4, 2014 Author Report Posted November 4, 2014 Canadaland was behind the Ghomeshi story breaking, as it turns out. But not in the way you'd think. http://canadalandshow.com/podcast/we-all-knew-about-jian According to the latest podcast, the Star was going to bury the story until Ghomeshi himself released his facebook post. Then they ran it. The thing is, it seems that he thought Canadaland was about to publish the story - but it wasn't. It was going to release a story about The National blocking Glenn Greenwald. All of this is happening because of one unemployed guy with a podcast... helped by the Toronto Star because he can't afford libel insurance. One podcast vs. Canada's national news flag bearer - the mind boggles. Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner
cybercoma Posted November 4, 2014 Report Posted November 4, 2014 I wouldn't call him an "unemployed podcaster." He's very successfully crowd-funded. The mission of his podcast is to provide classic investigative journalism. He claims that the major news agencies bury stories for a variety of reason, not the least of which is that they reflect poorly on the news channels' financiers. By being crowdfunded, Canadaland is accountable to so many different people that it's impossible for him to be influenced by any one interest. This is what he claims anyway. Quote
Michael Hardner Posted November 4, 2014 Author Report Posted November 4, 2014 I wouldn't call him an "unemployed podcaster." He's very successfully crowd-funded. Uh... successfully NOW yes. That's only as of the past 3 weeks or so though, and the story was being developed back in the spring when he still had very little income from this. If you listen regularly, you will hear how he was laid off from the CBC due to seniority and had no other ideas as to how to proceed. And his very recent success was a huge surprise to him and everyone. This is what he claims anyway. Claims seem to be proven by two major stories - one of which is getting a lot more interest.
